WAR CRY WORKS FOR THE BREEDER'S CUP JUVENILE FILLIES
Second, second, seconditis! Xena's last four starts had resulted in second places, which was highly annoying. The filly had came out of each race clearly frustrated, because each one she'd lost by a small margin. It was the end of the year, and the Breeder's Cup was upon them. The race that really mattered was just days away, and the thoroughbred filly was determined to win it. Marissa was determined to win it.
War Cry danced onto the track, tossing her head and sidestepping restlessly. She didn't want to warm up, she just wanted to go straight into a flat out, full speed gallop. Marissa handled her expertly though, and after several minutes the thoroughbred's trot became even and almost relaxed. She was entered in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies, which had attracted a field of six talented racehorses. Among them was Ventura, Rising Fury's last baby. There was also Wish Upon A Star, Samantha's Wisdom, Sweet Inferno and Dirty Diana.
The race was nine furlongs on the dirt, and fit perfectly into Xena's distance capabilities. Since she was perfectly able to lead a twelve furlong race, wire to wire with the constant pressures of other front runners, a nine furlong race was no problem in that respect. There was no reason why War Cry hadn't won in a while, really. She just had a bit of bad luck, which would hopefully end now.
Wish Upon A Star, owned by Witch Creek Stables, was out of Warm Wishes and by Everyday Hero. She was very well bred indeed, as any one who knew anything about her parents would know. She'd raced three times for three wins, one second and three third places and was a mid packer. Samantha's Wisdom, owned by Bowen Acres Stables, had raced only once and had won that race. She appeared to be a mid packer also. War Cry herself had run twelve times for four wins and eight second places. She ran as a front runner.
Then there was Ventura, owned by Stride Of Perfection, who was not only out of Rising Fury but sired by Impressario. She'd run an amazing season for a record of 19-8-8-3, and was definitely top competition for War Cry. She ran as a preceder. Next was Sweet Inferno, also from Stride of Perfection Stables, a filly by Crooked Fire and out of Sweet Stalker. She had a record of 20-3-9-6 and ran as a front runner. Finally, there was Dirty Diana, owned by Akita Rose Stables. Out of Lusitania and by All for Glory. She had had a quiet year, earning a record of 13-2-4-4. She ran as a closer.
