Mona had a big race coming up, the Dubai World Cup. She had managed to show in the Dubai Filly Cup previously and it was hoped that they could do one better in the World Cup. Of course it was not going to be easy - the competition was colts and there were bound to be more experienced racers in the field. But Mona was a star, it was hoped that one day she would rise to heights where she was seen as one of the best on the track. It was a goal toward which they were working, and they were working hard. Perhaps if they could show themselves successful in this race they would take another step closer. Certainly it would be a big thing if she was to be successful. After all, it was one of the biggest dirt races of the year and it would bode very well for the Breeder's Cup.
The bay filly was already on top in the stables. A real head turner, both because of her success on the track and her exquisite beauty. She had become the benchmark, the horse to beat for the other dirt racers, and she knew it. When she was led through the yard she walked with her head high like a proud princess and when she was in the pasture she made sure that every other horse knew exactly who was boss. The show-off mare was a special thing, and her success was bound to grow.
Taking hold of the filly's reins Alexia led the filly toward the track, the filly throwing her head and generally showing off as she did. She moved at a trot, her head held high and her conformation amazing. She knew what she was and she would never let anyone forget. Alexia smiled, laughing slightly at the filly's antics as they moved toward the track and upon reaching the track pulled the filly, stroking her nose. "We can do this, Mona, we can show them all." Alexia promised the filly before mounting, casting her blue gaze down the track. Yes, she had confidence in the filly and she had run well at the distance before and it was in the middle of her running range which was sure to give her a degree of advantage.
Jacob had come down to watch the workout, hoping to get tips for his ride Dark Charmer, and so helped to gate the filly who entered calmly and without a fight, as if she knew how important the coming race was and waited for the gates to open. Even as they did she flew out. At this stage in a race she would usually take a position behind a front runner, where she would be able to play her games, but in the workout she was alone and so she took up a moderately fast pace as she soared down the dirt track. The ground was soft under-hoof, caused by recent rains, and the filly seemed to take this in her stride. Even as mud splattered behind her she kept her eyes forward as she moved down the stretch.
The corner neared and the filly took it with confidence, moving around it with ease, her mind set as she knew what came next. Even as they came out of the corner she began to speed up, pushing herself, and when the crop played on her rump she pushed even harder, surging down the straight in all her beauty. Determined to take the post, determined to beat her previous times. They took the post, Alexia beaming. They could do this.
