Mona hadn't raced so far that year for the simple reason that there had been no races suitable for her. As a grade two dirt horse she ran distances between nine and twelve furlongs - a fact which meant the first race for her would be in the Unicorn Horn. It had meant that the dirt classic, which was not an unimpressive race, would be her first start of the year. To start with, this fact had worried Alexia but when she had thought about it her confidence had returned. Mona had proved herself against the best dirt horses once, it would only take a little work for her to do it again and with the race being the same distance as the last time her experience would come into the factors as well.

The bay mare walked proudly with the blonde jockey upon her back, her curved neck and conformation meaning she would be difficult to mistake for any other horse. Brown eyes gleamed with the confidence of a star and the mischief of a diva. No doubt that given half a chance she would start to cause trouble. Not in a dangerous way, ut just messing about. The jockey on her back knew the signs to watch for though. The twitch of the mare's ear, the way she held her head... She had learnt the mannorisms of her ride well and would watch them.

What they needed, however, was a workout... And a little competition. If she could find it, of course.
