FIRE DANCER AND KRYSTAL YHATE
She was back on the track two days after their two mile gallop, looking to do more work with her horse. Fire had needed a day off after her effort the other day, but she was back on track and ready for more now. And Krystal wanted more. The deadly ambition she had felt back then was still here, ever present, nagging her to make this three year old a champion. The role model of Henna Turath tugged at her mind and made Krystal look at her own actions in a new light. Never had she imagined Henna to be so inspiring, so much more inspiring than Amber Black had been to her. It was all Henna Turath right now. She recognized that, recognized the origins of this seed of deep desire to bring Fire to the top. Together, with her mount, they would become capable of amazing things.
Fire was the color of the autumn leaves. It was mid September, and the leaves had become burnt orange and bright pink. The leaves had become stained with the color of sunset, and winter was on the way. Fire was a bay. Her coat color was mirrored in the leaves around her, and she looked as though she could just blend in with the environment. Krystal smiled as she legged up onto her filly and got her going in a trot, and then eventual canter down the dirt track. Today she wanted to work on something specific. Last time she had ridden her filly, they had done nothing in particular. She had just let Fire run as her thoughts wandered over the current and potential details of Fire's career. And she had come to her conclusion. Come what may, they would try their hardest to just get going again and bring hell to those that didn't work as hard, or that had those pretty records that she was so intent on smashing.
It was just them and the flames that burned in their hearts today. Krystal wanted to burn the track. She wanted to make Fire sprint her heart out. Krystal did not ride sprinters; she was more the rider of intent middle distance horses. But she wanted to feel Fire's speed. She wanted to feel the wind whipping through her hair and feel the powerful muscles of the horse beneath her churning and taking them forward faster, faster until the world became more than a blur. She wanted the world to swirl and become unrecognizable beneath the speed of her filly. But the start of any workout, especially a sprint workout, was a good warm up. So they cantered for the four furlongs it took for them to get to where she wanted to do. And once she was there, she cantered Fire in circles, content to wait until she felt they were ready.
It was on their fifth revolution that she suddenly sent Fire forward into a full on gallop, urging the filly into the pace she desired and then some. Being a distance runner, Fire was not inclined to sprint as she was, but she was only too happy to be given the opportunity. The world blurred, but Krystal wanted more. She wanted a kaleidoscope of unrecognizable color to surround her and make the world unfamiliar. So she pushed for more. She relished the feel of the wind, and relished the feel of power than surrounded her filly, but she wanted more. Call it greed, call it having expectations way too high to be ever achieved, but she wanted it, and Fire tried her very best to give her jockey what she asked.
As they passed under the wire Krystal nearly kept going and then remembered that they were done. She pulled up the heavily sweating and panting filly, petting her neck absentmindedly and with a grin on her face. Next time out, they might actually find some competition among the stable crew. It wouldn't be too hard to challenge Amber to a race. When they worked out, it was just them and the flames in their hearts, and when they competed Krystal wanted it to be only about them. She wanted the ones they competed against to be forgotten.
