STRIDE OF PERFECTION STABLES
BREEDERS CUP WORKOUTS
BREEDERS CUP WORKOUTS
Amber Black leaned against the track rail. It was four in the morning and the weather was cold and clear. It was days like these that Amber considered sacred. No other conditions sharpened the processes of her mind as much as cold air. Come that weather with horse racing and you had a very astute, clever and witty Amber to deal with. Right now Amber was keenly observing the horses on the track. Yesterday she had watched Witch Creek work out their horses, as per usual drawing a crowd of pleased clockers. The Witch Creek horses knew how to work out and always did with a splash. To Amber, it would usually be amusing, but today she found herself critically analyzing the workouts and comparing what she gleaned to her knowledge of each horse's form. She had caught Serendipity Hills, Oak Hill and Intrepid all working out over the past couple days, and a brief glance at Star Thoroughbreds' Euphoria's Warrior. What many people did not know - or knew but ignored - was that Breeders Cup side brought out a side of Amber rarely seen as potently. This was her competitive, almost ruthless side, with a clever mind that missed nothing.
Krystal Yhate approached her boss curiously. She had worked with Amber a long time and knew Breeders Cup time always drove her crazy. Especially since they had entered every last Breeders Cup race and all but one of their active racehorses. Such a feat had never occurred to SOPS and Krystal personally thought Amber was going batty. But she also couldn't deny the strong chance SOPS had of having the best Breeders Cup year they had ever had. They had a strong host of horses with very determined riders on their backs. Not to mention they were old pros at this, having attended the Breeders Cup every year for at least the last decade. As Krystal approached Amber gave no sign that she knew. Krystal leaned against the track rail alongside Amber and gazed out at the working horses. It was about half past four in the morning. They had a lot of horses to work out but Amber didn't want them working until the sun had peeked a little over the horizon. So in about an hour they would be getting ready to rock and roll.
Amber, what's the workout schedule? Krystal implored. Amber did not take her eyes off of a flashy black horse as she replied. That's a surprise. You'll know as each workout comes. Just be ready. And stop worrying that the person we hired to take care of Perry will get eaten. Perry's not as crazy as that. Krystal snorted disbelievingly. Uh huh. That's like saying Lynara is sweet and nice. But on another note...who's in the first workout, at least? And what's your workout strategy? Witch-Creek-Flashy or regular? Amber's face widened into a smirk. To be revealed. But if I were you, I'd tell Valencia to get Icee ready and I'd go and get Ode ready too. Krystal knew that was as much information as she was getting. She nodded her head and withdrew, scurrying off to relay instructions.
After about five minutes Amber grinned and turned away from the rail. This first workout would grab the attention of the press and keep it until the very end. The Breeders Cup saddlepads were ready to be proudly displayed underneath the light racing saddles and she was ready to get the stable on its feet for the Breeders Cup. The fight was near and dear to her heart. It was time to bring on the storm.
