”Lula, look what I’ve got,” Jacey said, holding out a treat to the filly. Lula pricked her ears and looked at Jacey’s hand, before pawing at the floor with one hoof and then the other. Jacey smiled and put her hand flat out, offering the treat to the yearling filly. ”Good girl,” She giggled before stroking the filly’s neck. Lula was an obedient filly, and Jacey had taught her a couple of little tricks, but it was always a good thing to have a horse that listened. Lula was a half-sister to many great horses, including Breeders’ Cup Classic Winner three years ago, Moondance. Mona had a full brother, by the name of Starbright, also known as Bane. This also made Bane a half-sister to Lula. Dancing in the Moonlight sired Prancing in the Darkness, the sire of Hall of Famer, Dare To Dream, making this filly distantly related. She was one to watch on the tracks, and though she may not impress as a prospect, she would certainly do so as a two year old, and even go for the Tiara as a three year old.
Jacey stroked the filly’s soft velvet nose. ”Lula, I do love you, but today we’re going to do some more training.” The filly’s ears perked right up and she bobbed her head, nickering to Jacey. Jacey smiled and walked out of the stall, picking up the bridle and a saddle. Entering the stall, Lula looked at the saddle and bridle, but appeared not to be fazed by anything. She was a brave filly and a loveable one too. Jacey put the saddle over the stable door and brought the bridle towards Lula. She took the reins and placed them over the fillies neck. She wasn’t bothered about it at all. She stood to the left of the fillies neck and held her head down whilst the put the bit in her mouth. Lula opened her mouth right away and accepted the snaffle bit right away. She put the bridle over the ears and did up the noseband and the throat lash. Lula didn’t care. She stood right there. Jacey smiled and picked up the saddle, before placing it on the fillies back. She did up the girth, and that was when Lula pinned her ears slightly. She still didn’t really mind, the girth always irritated horses, but surprisingly it didn’t really do much for Lula. She happily accepted it.
Jacey opened the stall door and lead the filly out. She saw Beth outside, on board Ricky, the big bay stallion, wearing a western saddle. Though he never raced overly well, he made a good pony horse. Today, Lula would be working next to Ricky. Beth would be leading the filly, to get her used to being neck to a pony horse. She got a lead rope and attached it to the filly’s noseband, where she had a loop which would allow the rope to attach. Beth was handed Lula, and she walked onto the track alongside Ricky. They walked towards the first bend on the dirt and both horses broke into a trot. Lula pricked her ears and stared straight ahead. She looked around. It was her first time out on the track, but she loved it. Smiling again, Jacey sat in the stands watching as they worked. On the backstretch they broke into a canter. Lula tossed her head and let out a whinny. She didn’t spook at anything, not even when a bird rustled the trees. She just looked but didn’t mind. Her ears remained pricked throughout the whole workout.
They cantered back round the bend and into the home stretch level with each other. Beth stood in her long stirrups and led the filly. They remained at the same canter throughout the whole thing and they came down and crossed the wire. Pulling up, Lula tossed her head and snorted. She loved every second of it. She had a lot of racing spirit and it was obvious that when she walked out onto the track she wanted to do what she will do best in the future, and that, was run. She was a great filly, and one to die for at that. Jacey walked out onto the track and threw her arms around Lula. She would be ready to back come July or August, and ready to race at the start of Year Fourteen. Grinning, Jacey took the filly off Beth and walked her into the barn.
