The Rising, the two year old colt by The Natural, was entered into the upcoming September Maiden Dirt over 10 furlongs. Meester Surprise, was also entered into a maiden race; September Maiden Turf over 10 furlongs. Terror Smile, however had just won her second race, Grade 5 Turf in the Y11 AUTUMN CUP and was now entered into the Lucky Penny Stakes coming up in October.
Terror Smile just seemed to be getting better and better every day. Right after her first win in the July Maiden Turf, she was entered into the Exhilaration Stakes. She went up against a nine horse field to finish in third place right behind Naturally Charismatic and Dazzling Dame. In the AUTUMN CUP however, her race preceding the Exhilaration, she went up against these two horses once again along with 4 other opponents and claimed a first place finish. Her owner was especially happy with her performances lately and hoped to get her into Grade 4 races before December so that she would be eligible to enter the Breeder's Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
The Rising had never ran a race under Triple Krown Racing, so this upcoming race would be his debut with the stable. He had been working good and hopefully he would run a race as well as he works. This would be his final workout before running the maiden.
Meester Surprise, however had ran under TKR three times but had never won a race. His best performance was in this year's
Stable Face Off's Maiden Turf, where he placed fifth alongside a lot of talented horses including Terror Smile. His owner, lately was actually getting very nervous that Meester just couldn't get into the placings. Hailey, however was determined to get the colt by CCI Surprise Party a win so she kept training him hard. Hopefully the training would pay off. This workout would be his final before the maiden race.
Hailey Levine and John Barry stood by rail, awaiting the trio of racehorses. Both trainers had already decided the length as well as how the horses would work today. Michael Turner would be riding The Rising, Becky Andrews would be riding Meester Surprise, and Terror Smile would be ridden by Aiden Smith. Mike would be riding his regular ride and so would Aiden but since Aiden also rode Meester Surprise as another regular ride, Becky had to take up Meester instead. She had no problem with this however. Becky had taken a real liking to the three year old colt.
Meester came into view first. He was walking with lanky strides, his eyes darting around everywhere. He let out a long whinny to a couple of horses galloping on by. Becky adjusted her reins, and looked behind her. Next came Smiles and Ri. Smiles trotted with excited strides towards the track, Aiden on her back. Ri and Mike were right behind them. Ri was prancing right on Smile's tail, as if trying to impress her. Smiles didn't seem to really care about the charming colt and if anything was annoyed with him. Hailey chuckled at the colt; definitely sired by The Natural. She stepped up to the group and spoke, "Alright, so I want you guys to just gallop them easily for four furlongs over the turf and then race them for another furlong down the stretch. Aiden, make sure Smiles is up front setting the pace. Mike, I want him right behind Smiles and Becky, just keep Meester on Smile's flanks." She nodded, comfirming it to herself and then looked at all of her jockeys,"Okay?" They all nodded and Hailey smiled, "Alrighty, get out there then."
Aiden turned Terror towards the track and she trotted forward eagerly without him asking. Mike turned Ri and he pranced after the grey filly. Becky waited for them all to get onto the track before asking Meester to follow them. He trotted forward, just as eagerly as the others; just more paitent. They all headed to the gate on the backstretch where the starters were waiting. Ri went into the post number one(where he would be on raceday). Smiles loaded into the second position, easily and the Meester arrived at the gate. Becky asked him to enter the gate suddlly, expecting him to refuse. Surprisingly, Meester walked him hesitantly, but on the first try. Becky grinned and patted his neck, "Good boy!" The gates closed behind them and a second later the starting bell rang in their ears.
Ri shot from the gates like a bullet along with Smiles on his outside and then from the far outside, Meester ran forward with them as well, but a neck behind. Mike pulled on the reins and Ri threw his head but gave in. Smiles moved to the rail and Meester moved towards the inside as well, running alongside Ri. The two year old pinned his ears back at the close quarter running but didn't start a tantrum. Smile's ears also flickered back quickly at the colt on her outside but soon went forward again. They positions of the trio did not change at all until they entered the far turn.
Ri was still boxed in behind Smiles and on the inside rail until Meester's long sweeping strides took him just a twince wide on the turn. They entered the final furlong and Mike steered his colt into the small opening in the middle of the other racehorses. Ri responded gamely and charged through the tight space. Aiden, on top of Smiles, started to ask for more speed but not all of her speed. Becky, however asked Meester for all he had. The pleasing sabino colt responded with a burst of speed and flew out to challenge Ri, who was now starting to pick up more speed. Smiles, on the inside was slowly inching away from the two colts but still was not giving all she had. Meester was near his max speed and was charging past Ri. The two year old still hadn't changed leads nor had Mike asked him quite yet.
With only a few yards left for the horses to run, Smiles was out in front with a lead of five lengths, pouring out all she had and was still surging. Mike had just asked Ri to change leads and the colt had responded with a charge. He was now surging forward just as fast as Smiles but was not gaining nor loosing ground on her. Meester, however was charging right alongside Ri and was very slowly inching toward the leader. Becky was asking for more and more out of Meester and the colt was trying his hardest. Mike, on the inside was letting Ri run his own race, without really asking him for much. Aiden in front was standing in the irons as they crossed the finish line.
When they got back to the trainers, Becky patted Meester happy with his preformance. "He sure loves to please!" Hailey nodded, smiling and then turned to Aiden, "Smiles is doing very good! I can't wait for the Lucky Penny Stakes. You guys can go cool them out and put them away." Aiden and Becky led their horses away. Mike and Ri had just arrived. Mike dismounted and Hailey asked, "Why didn't you ask him for some more speed?" Mike looked at her, "That colt, Meester, has what I call some talent. He just lacks confidence. Today, I just gave him a bit of confidence that's all. If he believed he beat Ri today he will have more drive on raceday. Might actually help him win. No disrespect though, Miss Levine." Hailey nodded, "Understood. Next time just make sure you follow my instructions... You can go cool him out." Mike nodded and lead the colt towards the barn. Hailey spoke after him though, "Remind me to thank you if he does win." Mike grinned, "Will do."
