It was over a month since the colt had made his debut, placing second in the Mighty Moose Stakes in January Week One. Soon, February would close out and March would roll in, but Theo was once again preparing to run in a race with his jockey, Alexia Harshing, who had more than enough time to ensure the colt was well worked and as ready as he could be to run the best he could in the upcoming race where he was expected to face four other two year olds over a distance of six furlongs, which was at the lower limit of his preferences.
The gentle colt had greeted Alexia in his typical manner, butting his head against her shoulder and spending several minutes practically begging for more attention. She had checked his legs, even though she knew Lucas would already have checked for heat, and found herself pleased he had grown so strong since arriving here. He was a very good looking boy now, and was not as gawkish as he had once been.
As they reached the dirt track, the colt was energetic and clearly ready to go. His audits pressed forwards and his head raised as Lucas led him and the jockey onto the track. The plan was to gate the colt, and to see how he ran over the distance expected of him come race day. Alexia was sure he would handle it well, but would do as Matthias asked as she understood his desire to see the two year olds perform to their best ability.
As they entered the gates the colt seemed to stiffen slightly, but Alexia knew this would pass. He was not entirely impressed about the idea, still, but he was getting better all the time and would soon not even stiffen. As the shutters closed behind him, he slowly relaxed and Alexia rose in the stirrups. This was it, the race was about to begin, and this was her chance to prove just what the colt could do.
The buzzer sounded, the gates opened, and the colt broke slowly. It worked well for him, as a closer, for come race day he would want to be at the back of the pack for most of the race. Alexia steered the colt to the rail, and considered the competition that they would be facing. Loud And Clear would be starting in gate one - he had experience on his side with four races but was likely to be tired from racing the previous week which she hoped would cause him to run below his usual potential and his stable mate, Poesian Wings in gate two was in the same boat. In gate three, C'est Impossible of Prison Hill Stables had raced three times, but not for a month, and so it was possible she could use that to her advantage this week. Finally, Attractive Flight of Star Thoroughbreds had last ran to a second place in the Unicorn Horn and had raced twice.
Theo was the least experienced, but that was not all that mattered on the track. He was rested, he was talented, and he had a team who refused to let him down. As they moved up the track Alexia urged him forwards a little, keeping an eye on the distance that remained and smiled. So far, he was handling the dirt well, and he was definitely ready to push things to the next level as they hit the three furlong mark. The crop cracked, and the colt bolted forwards. His acceleration was great, and his closing power was clear. Each powerful stride sent him further forwards, each movement pushed him toward the post and they were flying.
Alexia could imagine them, fighting with the field as they made their way toward the post. She could imagine how it felt to pass them by, one by one, using the stamina the colt had reserved throughout the race. They soared past the post and she grinned. Theo was doing fine.
