It was a good year for In Stride Racing so far. Their maidens had done exceptionally well and almost all of them were grade fives. This time it was the turn of Calimero. He would be working with Majestic Hero today who was racing against Fleet Majesty, a three year old with more experience who was expected to take the win, but for Jester it wasn’t about the winning, it was about the experience, but today’s main focus was on two year old Romeo making his second start and attempting to take the win over National Treasure and In Front.
He was entered in the Swish Maiden Stakes. He was in Gate One. In Front was next. The colt had a show and a fifth and hadn’t had a workout since January, but he had experience and looked strong. National Treasure was the stronger of the two, with a place a show and a fourth. He looked likely to win today but racing styles were important. National Treasure was a closer, In Front was versatile so would run at the front hopefully, and Romeo was a preceder.
Both colts walked out onto the turf, jockeys on board. Ivana rode Jester and Beth rode Romeo. Smiling, Jacey stood at the side of the track ready to time them. They were going to breeze then run for the final two furlongs. Both colts trotted up the turf in unison. Both of them ran over the turf but Romeo ran over classic distances and Jester ran over mid distances.
They cantered in unison, side by side. Beth and Ivana chatted through it, making sure they were ready for it. Rounding the home turn, they began to turn the pace up a little bit and both colts shot forward, ears pricked running hard side by side as they came into the top of the stretch. Their stride matched and they powered energetically over the surface, covering the ground and grinding down on the finishing line. They were neck and neck and Romeo’s nose poked in front of Jester on the line. Beth patted him and she smiled. He was ready for this, and Jester was ready for Mage.
