Jacked up on Monster and Redbull, Tobias was wired and ready to go. He always felt like going hyper speed when he'd had some of his energy drinks, and it kept him from getting hungry, which was a bonus. It also kept him alert, and The filly under him could probably use a couple energy drinks of her own for just that reason. "Look alive." He told Runaway Oneleg. "You're not some lesson horse, look alive!" Tobias ran on results, and was used to riding good horses - now he had a fixer upper horse, and he had to do some fixing. Sweet horses were nice. He wouldn't deny that. But sweet horses needed to be able to run against the angry, the clever and the downright insane and they needed to do it well.
And that was what they were at the turf track today for - practice that Solo needed. "Come on, my lady." Tobias could see Connor settling himself in the grandstands, and he turned Solo for the gates. He'd make her work in this run, work her hard, and help her build the muscle she needed to gain the competitive edge. "Let's get going."
True to her nature, Solo went into the gate without issue. Tobias, meanwhile, was thinking. He'd make her a touch closer. Closers could sometimes control the pace of the race - not by leading, but by driving. It was all in the mind tricks. Once the closer made a move, it was possible to force everyone faster because they didn't want the closer to pass them. That was how he could drive this race. He'd push them to go faster than her by a great deal, then move in and steal the win as they tired. It was a riskier measure, driving the pack from behind, but they had nothing to lose. No previous tactics worked, and Tobias was sure of one thing - the bay would do anything he asked of her, which meant driving the field wasn't impossible. High tempered horses, or stupid ones, wouldn't be able to manage this trick.
"Let' do it, sweetheart." Tobias settled in his stirrups, and waited for the gate. Eight furlongs. Eight furlong and then it was off the the races again. The gates crashed open and Tobias started with the stick, which he normally didn't do, but it got Solo out of those gates fast as she should be, not tardy. Closers couldn't be tardy. If anything, they had to be more precise, since they had to deal with the entire field ahead of them, not just one, two or three horses in front, no, but as many as ten or thirteen. That was a minefield to navigate, that was. Her bombproof "lesson horse" nature, Tobias conceded, would help when it game to going through a maze of equines, but she still needed fire.
Solo snorted as she ran, forced into a strong, fast closing position by her jockey. She struggled a little, bit Tobias knew time would give her the power and stamina, and she wasn't holding up half bad given how hard he was running her, specially over eight furlongs. They held that way for four furlongs, near the middle of the track, going strong, before heading to the outside and then Tobias really gave it his all. The spring wind battered his face and threw bugs into his goggles, causing him to go after layer upon layer of them by the time they crossed the wire.
Solo kept going for a moment, before Tobias let her slow. Her breathing was fast, and she was sweaty, but Tobias was wired and grinning as Connor walked over. "She's gonna need a bath thanks to you." Connor shook his head. "Jesus, Tobias! Or...whatever you Jews say."
"Unimportant. How was the time?" Tobias hopped off Solo and checked the stopwatch. "Not bad." He commented. "She'll get better with time, and that's my job, that was what that was for." He turned around and kissed Solo on the nose. "You'll see. You'll have a taste and you'll want a bite, we just need to get you to the cake."
