Beyond Perfection and Derek Webber
Since the stable have growing lot larger it was needed to get more jockeys to ride the horses. Leo looked at the paperwork and called in Derek in. Hyia Derek, you would be riding Beyond Perfection in the next maiden race next week. You already know this colt can be temperamental and be honest I was leaning more towards Sam. But I want to see how he runs for you first, if there is a problem, you be assigned to another horse ok? Derek nodded as he understood. So what do you want me to do sir? Leo chuckled as he work out the plan schedules for his horses before the race. He is in a tough field next week, all that matters is he have a nice safe run. He shifts his position, so settle him into second or third position would be best for now. I haven't checked the other runners, I really don't want to either. Then at the final two furlongs let him run, this is to test how he listens to you as his jockey as well, so good luck. He smiled and Derek walked off out of the office, this was going to be challenge, but he was sure to pull it off without any hitches.
Going to the yard the bay colt was out ready, he hated other horses which was typical sitaution for a colt. Derek walked cautiously towards him, as he had no idea how Perfect would react to him. With good reason, as the colt threaten to kick him. Sam chuckled at him never allow a horse to rule over you lad. Sam held him by the head, and even the most aggressive horse would know Sam isn't the person to mess with. Got to show them you mean business and they know not to mess around lad. Derek nodded remembering this and with Sam's help was given a leg up onto the colt. Have you ridden him before? Sam shooked his head, no but I have ridden horses like him. Just remember to hold these kind of horses back in the race, and you be rewarded with a amazing ride he chuckled and smiled more, as he led them towards the track. Enjoy the ride kid, he said and let Perfect go and the colt started to canter on the track really happy.
Derek remembered Sam words as the colt was breezing towards the gates. He allowed himself to be loaded into the gate, and Derek stroked his neck a little. Good boy, just stay calm. Perfect tossed his head as he was testing Derek's hand. The gate sprung open and the colt broke a little fast, catching his rump on the gate. Calm down you fool Derek tired to handle him but the colt wasn't having any of it and took the upper hand and galloped more faster. His mood was really grumpy this morning. Straight away he galloped more in front not bothering to reserve his energy at all. There wasn't another horse with him so he would settle. Derek would have been in huge trouble, if Sam wasn't watching Derek, pull him back you can do it, listening to Sam advice he pulled on the reins, it took a lot of fighting, but Perfect began to listen and steadied his pace into the position which Leo wanted in the first place.
The ride was being lot more smoother and Leo came down to watch as he always liked watching his own horses run before the race. Derek was coming to the final two furlongs and allowed Perfect to have his head back. Come on now you can go! Being stubborn perfect wasn't listening to him and stayed in the steady pace, right through the workout. Derek felt like a failure as the horse wouldn't listen to him. Jumping off the colt, he left. Sam go and put the horse back I am going to have a word with Derek, he said and Sam nodded. Leo ran after Derek and held his shoulder. You never leave a horse like that. Not all workouts go to plan, these horses are like person sometimes. Some are mean and pushes you to the limit. Now you have to form a partnership with this horse. You understand? Derek nodded and left to cool off, as Leo was on edge lately, especially after the attack on his stock three weeks ago.
