FLASHY WINGS AND HENNA TURATH
TDI LIVE THIS LIE AND AMBER BLACK
FLASH'S AND FALSEHOOD'S SPRING CUP WORKOUT
He moved like royalty and the bay four year old was deserving of that arrogant grace. He moved as though he was not the prince but the king, and he was once more deserving of that grace. Flashy Wings, son of News Flash and Forbidden Wings, prover of both of his parents' bloodlines, winner of numerous awards and raced of note, and surprisingly undefeated thus far this season. Henna Turath had always been proud of her stallion and he continued to make her proud. It didn't matter if silly Sunset Crusade was in their next race. The grand, ever so royal stallion had been beaten by Lynara's Kingdom, a complete surprise filly who hadn't even won in the Breeders Cup, in his last race. A filly. Not even bred to defeat a horse like him. The excuse was that he had been injured in the last stages of the race but Henna thought she knew better. Her worst enemy had been beaten fair and square and she was never going to let Marissa Star live this down.
Riding aboard her stallion she planned their race prudently. Sunset Crusade had raced once this year for a second place and was coming in dainty after that supposed injury. Flash was built strong and tough and had been out racing since the first week he could. He had raked in some wins and was looking for more. Henna wanted nothing to stand in their way, especially that....thing. Her dislike of the stallion and his rider was well known and she was done with seeing the stallion's backside. This race was going to be theirs and when she won she would gloat like there was no tomorrow. Cruze would lead the race and Flash would take up a position alongside. She would be extra careful rating him. She wanted to have enough left to defeat the stallion by ten lengths, if not more. She wanted to see the anger on Marissa Star's face when Flashy Wings flashed past to win. Oh, she couldn't wait for it!
Amber saw the smirk on Henna's face and couldn't help the brief grin she let flit across her own at the sight of it. Henna was no doubt gloating in advance. She was preparing her victory speech and already feeling it in her veins. Amber wished Henna luck. She knew Cruze was strong and would be out for revenge in this race, and she knew Marissa would be looking for a win too. It was just the two of them and she knew it could go to either one. She bid her luck in her mind and instead focused on the horses she was facing in the Grade Two Dirt. Euphorion and Silverianna. A Merry Bay King son and a Bank On Silver daughter. What a perfect race between two rivals' foals...and Falsehood, the older stallion who would hopefully defeat these two upstarts. She grinned at the thought and planned her race.
Both horses were preceders, and Amber knew she was leading the race. She would likely make sure the fractions were a bit slow, as she knew she wouldn't be able to tire out her competition without tiring out Falsehood. Ianna had won her first start of the season, catapulting her to grade two in style, and she was the Best Three Year Old Filly winner of last year. Euphorion had yet to win but had placed third and second. He was definitely talented and Amber knew she would have her work cut out for her. Falsehood had less consistency than the two, and though he had a full season's racing extra under him he had the same amount of wins. He had placed second and third this season and wasn't as impressive as the two younger horses. It worried Amber to think about it. She loved her stallion and had fought for him as soon as he was a weanling. Yet, he lacked the regular prodigious talent of her runners despite the fact that he was part of her furniture by now. She loved him and wanted him to excel. She just had to work harder for it.
Her face set in stubborn lines, she approached Henna and the two quickly turned their mounts and began their warm up. They would be cantering two miles and then galloping together for six. It was a stamina workout today, no hard racing, and both women would be living each furlong. They would be prepping their horses for races they both desperately wanted to win and speed would likely blaze at one point or another despite them both wanting to keep the tempo low. They began their canter and were intent on their horses. Flash was feeling jumpy and energetic today. He bounced along in a manner reminiscent of Pegasus Wings, his half brother. Henna sat to the pace with a smile, rocking with it. She felt no irregularities. Falsehood, meanwhile, moved with arrogant confidence. He acted like the king and he always kept a step ahead of Flash. Flash ignored his challenges for now but Henna knew he wouldn't let them go ultimately unanswered.
Two miles of cantering later and the two horses were both sweating and feeling a bit lighter on their feet. The two women eased them into a gallop. Henna had her hands full immediately. Flash was meeting Falsehood's earlier challenge readily and his eyes were seeking out open ground and the lack of the gray stallion at his side. Falsehood was the complete opposite. He coasted along easily, as though forgetting Flash's presence, or ignoring it. Amber couldn't help but smirk. She knew Falsehood had gotten under Flash's skin, and that was the first step to winning. Flash was intensely talented and Amber knew that they would stand a chance of defeating him in a race. That must mean that they stood a chance here and now against Euphorion and Silverianna.
The six furlongs passed in a blur of speed and soon the two women were easing up their sweating mounts, sudden and renewed confidence in their veins. They were ready to go.
