Sometimes Tobias wondered exactly what it was like in Hammy's brain. The colt was certainly a cut different from every racehorse, but yet he did quite well, despite unknown lines and being a little lacking in the brains department. But there was something else to him. Heart. Heart and strength that Tobias was sure in. Even if they struggled, Tobias felt that somehow, Himeros would run his way to the top. He might not understand it, but he sure would do it anyways.
"Right. Quite a lot is going to be riding on this. This is our first stable face off." Connor looked serious for once - he was even wearing a shirt! No stains! "We're trying to represent here, trying to give the bigger stables a little bit of a bloodied lip. We're the fourth-place stable in the Green Horse leaderboard, and we'll see if we can't do something to them. But first and foremost, we have to do it one race at a time. So, we start with Hammy." Connor stroked the thoroughbreds face, and Hammy, not fully aware, just stood there and let him. "This race is going to be huge. Eight horses, and it's not a juvvie-only. Himeros is completely horse-blind, so we can use that to our advantage. Just run him suicidal, and see what happens. It's the easiest way to run him, and you'll confuse the other jockeys. He's not well known, so his weird style will help us."
"Rodger, Connor." Tobias hopped up onto the colt, who warned up and ready to go, spooked at a nearby water bucket, then snorted and looked around. Tobias chuckled. "Earth to Hammy." He turned the horse and they were off, moving towards the gates. They'd run it in the full nine furlongs, for a couple reasons. Firstly, the gate was the cue that got into the bay colt that it was time to run. Without the gate, Tobias didn't think he'd get a proper work in on this two year old. Secondly, they needed to keep Himeros' stamina up. He was a sprinter, but his style wasn't called 'suicidal' for no reason. He needed to get going and run like no one's business, but couldn't poop out on them in the last furlong, either.
Getting into the gate was easy, and Hammy's ears flopped around like there wasn't some great metal contraption around him, though as soon as the gates opened, that changed. Himeros broke like a bullet, and Tobias let him go. The more space they put between them and everyone else early on, the better with this running style. Furthermore, there was a method to this madness. In addition to him, there was one other frontrunner. Arachne. Tobias had heard plenty about that filly. She was cruel and competitive, and Tobias knew Himeros would frustrate her. Himeros might not even know she was there, but that filly sure would! She'd want to keep up, and even if hr jockey knew better, it would be a fight to keep her there. That would help deal with some important competition. Furthermore, Loud and Clear and Bella Luna were both preceders. Bella Luna was a stalker, and if she wanted to run by her standards she'd have to try and push either a dangerous filly or a horse that, well....probably didn't know other horses from rocks (there was a reason Himeros was in perpetual isolation at PHS). Or, they could frontrun for the midrunners and only closer in the race, whichever. In either case, Himeros would either be dragging them or far, far away. Was it risky? Yes. Could it very well be worth it? You better believe it!
Tobias brought Himeros in by the rail, and let him keep going. He needed some edging on by the sixth furlong, but all said and done that wasn't very bad at all, given he'd just sprinted at top speed for a full six furlongs. This was essential to run 'suicide', and rather impressive in Tobias' mind.
With some usage of the stick, Tobias brought Himeros in past the nine furlong marker and to the end of the workout.
"I liked that." Connor said with a nod. "It was respectable."
"Just respectable?" Tobias asked, with a raised brow.
"Yes, because if it wasn't respectable I'd be drowning my sorrows or my joys in beer, and I can't get drunk tonight. Though..." He paused, "I think, if it were a night I could get drunk on, I'd be celebrating."-----------------------
