[Apollo Bear] & Kyle Landing - Prep for Florda Derby
To say they were the underdogs was putting it mildly, but Nick knew Kirsten Jade's wishes was to run Apollo Bear in the Triple Crown and he needed every prep race that came along. The field was brutal and part of Nick had wanted to withhold the black colt, but then he saw something shimmering in the colt's eyes and instinct simply told him to let things be.
Kyle was thrilled to once again be on an Augusta prodigy. Every horse that had been entered was dignified in their own right. Eternal Phantom was a Night Stalker x El Sol Del Mar filly that was a versatile and could run as a front runner or a closer. She was a fiery filly and Kyle knew they'd have to keep an eye out for them. They would be overlooked in this race and Kyle was going to use that to their advantage. Miracles could happen and if they could happen then they were going to run the competition right off their feet and claim the win. In all reality, Grades had nothing to do with the caliber of the horse you were riding and Kyle knew the talent that was cantering underneath him.
He slapped the black colt's neck as they flew through their warmup. The black colt was much more calmer than he'd expected...Kyle was observing this thought when another horse that was breezing began to thunder up from behind. Oilo heard the challenge of hooves and suddenly the fire ignited within him...
Ah....Challenge it is... Kyle quickly took advantage of the moment and gave the black his head. In a surprising show the colt flew. Yes...flew. Kyle let the colt run steadily for three furlongs...he felt his mount and asked for more....the colt responded immediately with another surge of speed.
He could be a suicidal runner! Kyle screamed in glee at the discovery. The field would be fast paced if Olio or Phantom took the lead and they'd have to be careful to no let the closers catch them in the end....and save the massive amounts of stamina this colt had for the fight at the end.
Kyle attempted to bring up the colt and it was a fight, but eventually the black fury slowed to a hot trot as Kyle let the colt out to cool. Instant Success would be the heavy favorite and Kyle knew they would need Olio's massive amount of stamina to fend off both Isa and Warrior....it could be done...they could win this...he knew it and Olio knew it...
It would be crucial though to not battle with Phantom and Kyle was sure that he could hold the colt in check.
On paper they didn't look like the victors...but then papers didn't see what was in the heart of his mount, the speed he possessed and the fire that had been stoked.
Yes, papers didn't predict usurpers...those came by surprise and they competition wouldn't know what was about to hit them.
