Five furlongs. It was the shortest sprint of them all, and Moses was sure they were up for it. It was midmorning, and the flaxen chestnut stallion almost seemed to glow in the light. He was pretty, Moses would give him that, but Ford Model T was more than that. Ford was on fire, doing very well thus far in his four-year-old season. This was a work to help get that going forwards, keep the luck running. He seemed to be a car on the track this year, and the more they could keep that up, the better.
Today, the short sprint would be all they needed to help keep him in form. Skylark was already in the stands, and so Moses piloted Ford for the gates. The stallion was excitable and eager going into the gates, as per usual. He wasn't quite as ADHD as he was at two, but he sure was a nutball. He had fire. Moses liked that. He just got his goggles down as the gates sprung open and they were off, flying down the turf. Moses had to think fast, and keep Ford held. A frontrunner in a short sprint meant time to strategize was difficult to really get, and couldn't be left for granted. He kept Ford on the outside of the track, trying to avoid any possible preceder pressure, and let him build up almost gradually. One furlong...two furlong...three...now explode.
It seemed like they moved in the blink of an eye. The turf below them was a greenish blur, gradually becoming blurred grandstands as Moses had at it with the stick. Ford stepped strong and fast, at a breakneck pace. In a sprint, there was no room for tiring. Tiring came after. Five furlongs was very little to work with, but to Moses it tested the true heart of the horse. How willing, were they, to run? And really run? That was a sprint, and that was the trademark of a sprinter. A true runner, a true speed demon.
With any luck, they would simply drive on by their competition, getting in front and leaving them behind on the torn up turf. It had worked thus far - and the jockey hoped it would work yet again.
They crossed the five furlong mark, ending the mock race almost as abruptly as it started, and Moses couldn't help but notice that Skylark was standing and clapping...which of course, echoed around the grandstands and spooked Ford, sending him off at a wild gallop to the back areas, with Moses holding on for dear life. That was the one thing a car had that Ford did not - parking breaks.
