APOLLO BEAR
The nearly black solid colt bobbed his head as he rounded the turn. He kicked into another gear and stretched out his legs over the track. He dug in his heels and pushed off his hind legs. He was flying down the stretch. Aaron leaned as far down as he could and enjoyed the feel of the colt putting in yet another gear. He was just cruising. Olio lunged forward under the wire with a final burst of speed. Aaron shook his head and stood in his stirrups. He just could not believe this colt had not ran in the Triple Crown. He was unbelievable.
Kirsten fingered the stopwatch and sighed. That was probably Olio's best work yet. And it was over the turf. It was strange that he would put in such a good work when he mostly only ran over the dirt track. She shrugged, Ah well... She bit her lip. Unless...
Aaron smiled for the first time that day and rubbed the big colt's shoulder. His big teddy bear of a racehorse. He didn't need a stopwatch to know that the run he just gave was probably his best yet. The horse was improving with every step it seems. Aaron couldn't wait to see what the horse will do on his next time out on the track... whenever that will be...
Aaron took the time to let his mind wander as he walked Olio down the track to cool off. This was his last mount of the day and he was not in any rush. He remembered when Olio first came to ARS as a little yearling. Everyone was jumping up and down with excitement about the baby's potential as a racehorse. He was such a sweetheart with a big heart for racing. It was a surprise to everyone when Olio skipped out on the Triple Crown. He just wasn't ready a month ago Kirsten said. Was he ready now? Would she put him in the Belmont?
They have been working on his distance for about a week and a half now and his boss has not mentioned a thing about the Belmont yet... It was driving Aaron nuts. He hated the suspense.
Once Apollo Bear was nice and cooled off Aaron dared to approach the rail where Kirsten stood. "So? Kirsten nodded at Aaron and smiled. "He is ready now." Aaron bit his lip. "Ready for the Belmont in two weeks?" Kirsten looked at Apollo Bear carefully. "Uhhh... Let's try him in the Belmont Turf Classic instead. See how he handles it... We'll go from there." Surprise flickered across Aaron's face. The Belmont Turf? That was a surprise. He did not expect that. In fact no one will expect that...
