BOWEN ARROW Ridden by Chris Stevens
(Kindergarten Stakes Workout // June)
Bowen Arrow had been resting from racing for a couple of months now. Chris decided to bring the colt out of resting and work him for the Kindergarten Stakes. With the saddle already on him Chris reached over and was on the colts back. He trotted the colt onto the turf track and let him loosen his muscles and stretch his four legs awhile. Coming up to the gate Chris patted Bow and got himself ready. Bowen tended to stay in mid-pack of the herd not running his full speed until the very end. He ran distances of 7-10 furlongs so he was a stamina type horse not a sprinter.
"Alright Bow, I know you have a couple months off the track but, let's see what you got." Chris said grabbing the reins he then had the colt take off and Bowen Arrow was off gaining a little speed to catch up his normal time. Bowen turned the first turn keeping his stride normal Chris not doing anything just yet letting the horse do his course running like a horse ran. These next few months Chris would work each of his assigned horses individually. He saw that Terri's mare Declarate broke her maiden and Chris wanted his horses to that to even if he already had a grade 5 colt but, wanted to work his maiden horses to move up into greatness.
The colt was already along the back stretch and his breathing was normal and when reaching the last pole mark Chris then stepped in and gave the horse a gentle tap on the hide and the horse bolted off gaining more speed going down the last turn expanding his leg movements pounding harder onto the ground the colt ran as fast as he could down the last stretch to get to the finish line. This was Arrow's way to stay out of his way cause during the last stretch he gave it all he had not backing down until crossing that finish line.
Coming to a last trot the colt came to a stop biting at his bit slowing his breathing slowly. Chris slid off his back and and walked him off the track cleaning him up so he wouldn't smell in the stables. This run was a good one and it would only be a matter of time to see if the colt did well in this up coming race. He petted the racehorse and guided him back into the stables and would wait til the big day. Chris hoped that someday Bowen Arrow would make it to the Belmont Stakes and someday maybe win the Triple Crown but, right now was one step at a time.
