They had been waiting in the wings patiently for the past six months, resting up, filling out and getting ready to make their comeback on the track. Both fillies were owned by Star Thoroughbreds but they were now owned by Jacey and Matthias. Both Jacey and Matt had waited patiently for the time to come that both fillies would be ready to head back out onto the track. They’d been in the pool, treadmill and horse walker, slowly but surely muscling up and preparing for the next start to take place.
Beth and Eve had been watching their fillies train up for months now, and they were extremely pleased with the progress made by both of them. Both of them were turf runners, and with each race, they were going to try and creep back up the ranks. They were going to race on The Wire and Green Horse Fields alternatively if they could, and be entered in many grade five races to try and creep up slowly into the likings of Mizadori, who was now an accomplished Grade Three racer who seemed likely to retire this year and bred to a good dual stallion to have a great foal.
Both of the fillies had raced against each other before, so it was no surprise that the pace would be fierce. Maya would be setting the pace, with Leah in behind her, pressing the pace and stalking her every stride of the race. Both jockeys had mounted up and walked their horses onto the track. Eve sat upon Maya, and Beth was riding Leah. Jacey walked to the stands and leant on the rail, leaning over and smiling, waiting for the pair to come over. They rode over and smiled at Jacey, who stood up straight and smiled. ”Okay you pair – you’re going to go eight furlongs side by side. In the last two furlongs, let them loose. Let’s see what speed we can get from these two.”
They nodded and smiled. Eve looked at Beth and grinned, Beth nodded and smiled back. ”Shamone?” Beth questioned. ”Shamone!” Eve responded. They were ready to go. The two trotted round the corner side by side, Maya on the outside of Leah, who was hogging the inside rail. They were the only pair entered in the race, so this workout could have a completely different outcome, come race day. Both fillies broke into a rhythmic canter along the long side and cantered side by side. They covered the turf with their long strides, Leah’s slightly longer than Maya’s. They both brought their heads in and loped along the turf.
Jacey sat patiently watching talking to herself. Perfect, she whispered quietly. As they rounded the bend, they stayed side by side, Maya’s stride lengthening as she was on the outside of Leah. Into the stretch, they let them loose. Jacey’s stop watch started timing the two furlongs. Both horses extended their stride and stayed side by side. Heads bobbing up and down, the jockeys pushed them forward and stretched themselves out as much as they could. The wire got closer and closer and yet nothing could separate them as they flew under it. The jockeys patted their horses neck, yet Jacey was still in awe at the time they had just achieved. 19 seconds for two furlongs wasn’t just pretty good, it was jawdroppingly astonishing.
