Breeders' Cup Juvenile Dirt Sprint
"We've been witness to several impressive races so far. With the three previous winners being Stride of Perfection Stable's Battle Wings, Witch Creek's Frozen Motion and Intrepid Racing's Acantha. The next race up on the card is the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Dirt Sprint. Two year olds will travel over six furlongs on the dirt in what will assuredly produce a fast time. The two year olds are precocious, but will they tire in the final furlong? The times have already been suicidal in the one dirt race today and that was a router race. We shall see. Gerald Thompson, my co-host in the paddock, what do you see for this race?"
"You are right that there have been several fast races on the card and from the look of this bunch, it will be the fastest yet. Star Thoroughbreds has the two prohibitive favorites and both look absolutely spectacular. Crowned Queen last won the Eagle Cup and did so impressively. She looks every bit as good as she did on that day. Sugar Rush is a glorious looking filly and is really on her toes today. Some sweat, but nothing too bothersome. She is a confirmed front runner and one that we expect to go right to the lead out of the gate.
In the middle of the field is Reflected In Water. Nature Blue Stable's representative is a physically impressive looking filly. She has been knocking at the door all season and her last work is reported to have gone very well. I wonder if six furlongs is mite shorter than what she really wants to do, but her class cannot be denied. She is the third choice in the field. She will break side by side with arch rival Tears No More. If there is one horse that needs to be awarded for best looking colt, it is Tears No More. He is just towering over the horses, his muscles rippling. He is a bit more interested in the crowd than I'd like and he is known to have gate issues. But physically, none look better.
The final stall will be occupied by Stride of Perfection Stable's horse Alucard. Stride of Perfection did win a Breeders' Cup race earlier and I cannot imagine that their racing ability will run out here. He is the least bothered by the crowd and is seemingly indifferent. Very gorgeous and he has been known to toss out a knock out punch. Back to you Bill."
"Thank you and the riders are up." The crowd moves away from the paddock, following the line of horses out to the track. A hush falls over the abandoned paddock, a calm image for the chaos of Breeders' Cup time. A lone photographer snaps a shot, hurries to the racetrack afterwards
Sugar Rush leads the way, breaking into a canter up the track. She is sweating now and her rider just wants to get the filly away from the crowd. She canters up the dirt, eyes bright and legs limber and swift. Crowned Queen follows along in a reserved hand-canter. Her rider looks confident and eager to get the show on the road. Alucard and Tears No More break off side by side, both colts on the muscle, living up to the rave reviews. Reflected In Water is jogged and then cantered after them, poised and regal as ever.
"Ladies and Gentlemen the horses are at the post."
Tears No More gives the starters some trouble at the gate, tossing his head and slamming sideways against the gate. The workers straighten him out, load him. The rest go in swiftly after the notorious troublemaker goes in. Silence falls, a chirp of the bells and the gates burst open.
"And Sugar Rush is out of there like a rocket. Tears No More, breaking between Reflected In Water and Alucard bolts after the Star Thoroughbreds' filly, but is steadied by his rider when the separation is only a length. He settles to that speedy filly's outside, in prime position. Crowned Queen and Alucard are next, third and fourth respectively. Reflected In Water is just behind them, taking all of the kickback, but looks to be moving nicely.
Sugar Rush rips through the opening half in 21.45 seconds. She is really stringing this field out with only Tears No More in close pursuit. The big bay colt is stalking her through the suicidal pace. The others are quite content to sit back and let the front runners do the dirty work. Their positions are unchanged. Sugar Rush goes through the backstretch, finally cools her jets down for a :45.13 half-mile split. She could have already done serious damage and it is clear that her rider believes that there may be a speed bias to carry the filly. Tears No More has moved up a little as they go into the far turn. He is now at her barrel and is rounding up impressively to her outside. He runs by her and is now a length in front!
Crowned Queen and Alucard split around Sugar Rush as she is now backing up dangerously. Crowned Queen runs up the rail, spread out in full pursuit of the bay colt. Reflected In Water has no where to go, a tap by the rider causes the sprinting filly to dodge to the outside of Sugar Rush who has no more. She nearly goes down, looks as though she clipped heels with Sugar Rush! Reflected In Water nearly goes down in the early portion of the stretch. Alucard and Crowned Queen are gunning for Tears No More whose three length lead is diminishing quite rapidly!
Crowned Queen pulls up to his inside! It is going to be a thriller ladies and gents! She takes the lead. Tears No More gamely battles with Alucard! And oh my God! Reflected In Water is storming down the center of the stretch! Nature Blue Stable's filly is coming with a fantastic rush down the outside! Two hundred yards from the wire and she looked completely beaten!
Crowned Queen spies the other filly, battles courageously under the onslaught of her male competitors. Reflected In Water is coming! If she wins, she is tons the best! But Crowned Queen has a last burst and she goes under the wire a head in front! What a magnificent run from Reflected In Water to be second! It is a photo finish for third!"
Wild applause sounds as the chestnut filly is cantered into the far turn. An outrider catches her and the rider slaps his hand in a high-five. "Holy cow that is got to be one of the best runnings of the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Dirt Sprint ever!"
"And it is Tears No More for third. What a gritty race he ran after those suicidal fractions."
"Ladies and gents, I draw your attention to the fact that there is a new world record over six furlongs. Crowned Queen has run 6 furlongs in 1:06:43 seconds!"
Congratulations Star Thoroughbred for your amazing win with this superb filly! The Breeders' Cup Juvenile Dirt has gone to Crowned Queen!
Win. Crowned Queen
Place. Reflected In Water
Show. Tears No More
Fourth. Alucard
Fifth. Sugar Rush
