GHOST RIDER && JOHNNY GARNER
DEVIL'S BLESSING && TALIA SMITH
RED HERRING && SAMMIE PICKETT
Churning the dirt at a good pace, the high energy colt was alert and responsive to commands. Cian was not happy that Red had overtaken him, but his pace didn’t drop. Gia was trucking along beside Cian, looking quite comfortable. Johnny pressed her on further, encouraging her to dig deeper. Gia responded with a swish of her tail and they found themselves running alongside Talia and the angry colt, while the red colt powered on in front.
It was finally starting to warm up in the racing country, and that meant feisty horses at Firestone Racing. All three jockeys were at the Firestone track, waiting patiently and chit chatting with each other while they waited for their first rides of the day. Carter Leeson, the tall, brown-haired trainer, sat by the rails down at the track. Firm, the track was a little bit too dry and would kick up a lot of dust. He would have to remember to get the water truck to settle the dust after the workout. Excitable Talia seemed to be deep in a conversation with Johnny, while the youngest team member, Sammie, stood a little way from them, arms crossed and looked to be in deep thought. Carter couldn’t help but notice that she looked a bit cute when she was thinking about something. Though, his thought was cut short when he heard hooves on the gravel path leading to the track.
The first of the horses to arrive at the track was the lovable Gia, who looked as alert as every with her bright eyes. Her neck was curved, her stride sure and confident. Obviously, she was having a good day as she wasn’t making a ruckus and she was keen to get onto the track. Johnny walked over and greeted the mare affectionately before mounting and being led out onto the track.
The next to arrive was the bay colt, Cian. Full of energy, he was practically cantering beside the handler, his head held high and ears perked as he moved across the ground, lashing out every once in a while. Every now and then he would toss his head. Excitable Talia practically ran toward the colt and put her arms around his neck, to Cian’s displeasure. It looked like Cian might react violently, as expected, but he managed to hold herself in and soften his complexion, the perks of forming the bond that Talia had worked on forever. Cian allowed the jockey to mount.
The final horse to arrive was Red. He was a willful thing, not in a good way. He could be very violent, but he was just a very energetic colt. Sammie looked the colt over, sighing. They had a long way to go, but Sammie was determined to make the colt like her.
With the jockeys mounted the next task was gating. The first to be gated was Red, as the colt had no issues at all with the gate. Next was the spirited Gia. She, of course, had a lot of problems with the gate. It took several attempts before they actually managed to gate her and close the doors behind her. Luckily enough, Cian walked calmly into the gates. The shutters were closed and the hoses were ready. It was going to be an easy race for Red, as he was the most experienced and only a year older than the two others. Gia was up against the two boys for tougher competition, to get her ready for her first Grade Five start. Cian was just along for the ride, just to get a workout in before his next race.
As soon as the gates opened the race was on. Cian was the first out of the gates, flying forwards and taking a position against the rail. Red also broke quickly, while Gia was slower to start as expected. They took up positions according to their racing styles. Cian the front runner, Red the pace-presser and Gia the midpack horse. In a bigger field, positioning would have been more difficult but in this small, three-horse field each had their place.
At the front of the field, Cian was in his element. Pushing at a high pace, putting little distance between Red and Gia who was moving at a slightly slower pace. Johnny spoke quietly to the lone filly and suddenly she changed into a higher gear, creeping up on Red Herring fast. Cian was still quietly leading, but it wouldn’t be for long. Red had stalked long enough, going for his instinct and left Ghost Rider in the dust, overtaking Devil’s Blessing in an instant. He was on fire. Sammie did not encourage him, but she did not hold him back either. Behind her, Johnny and Talia were in a league of their own.

The wire came too quickly, Red the obvious winner, but it was too close to call between the red filly and the dark colt. Both were even competition, and Gia was proving to be one hell of a competitor against the tougher competition.
