The large horse trailer pulled up to the track, carrying the precious cargo of 5 Thoroughbred racehorses. All 5 were entered into the races during the first week of August, and needed a work-out. Elaine Brown hopped out of the truck and headed back to the trailer door. The jockeys had driven over with the exception of Kent Jones, who had ridden in Elaine's truck. She opened the back of the trailer and gently set it on the ground. "Alright. Kent, you take Harry and Ro over to the turf track and give them each a 7 furlong breeze. Have Dominic hold one of the two for you while you work the other." She gave orders to the jockey to be gentle with the yearling, as she didn't want him ruined before he even started to race. "Evelyn, take Lottery over to the dirt track and give Lottery an 11 furlong breeze. Whitney, take Theo over to the dirt track as well, but give him an 8 furlong breeze." She told the same to the two jockeys who would ride the dirt horses races in the upcoming week. Turning to the son of one of the trainers, Brent, she said, "Take Leah over to the turf track, and give her a 10 furlong workout. Don't push her too hard, as I want her to get up a grade in her racing status. She's 2 wins away. She doesn't need to be injured." Her orders for Leah were strict, as she had fallen in love with the grey mare they had purchased recently. She patted Leah on the neck before she was led away to be tacked up. She walked over to the line of horses and gave each of them a stroke on their neck to hopefully keep them calm. It was to no avail as Black Zephyr suddenly kicked out at the horse he was hooked up next to, Aquatic Addiction. Elaine grabbed a crop and gently tapped the colt on the shoulder, reprimanding him for his misbehavior. The colt started a moment, but then was still. "There's a good boy." She said, praising him for listening to her reprimand. By now, the entire crew was tacked up and ready to go. "Alright team. Head off with your orders!" She said, waving them off. She'd go back and forth between the tracks with the newest stallion, Rio. He was retired, but still loved the track. It was easier to get around on horseback if something were to happen as well.
The horses were loaded into the gates, as they needed a gate workout as well. She'd given those as last minute orders. The gates opened, and two of the three turf horses launched out of the gates. Harry was prancing on the sidelines, eager to race. The colt would do better on his own for a workout. Ro and Leah were each taken over their respective distances, and were brought back slightly winded. Leah was less winded than Ro, having been used to the longer distance breezes. Kent switched out Ro for Harry and mounted him, trotting onto the track. The yearling was high strung at the time being, having been cooped up in his stall lately because he had lightly scraped his shoulder on the pasture fence, and it needed time to heal. The wound was gone now, and he was ready to work off his oats. Kent started him out with a slow jog, and gently pushed him to a gallop for his breeze. While watching the track in front of them, Kent kept careful note of the colt's strides to make sure they were all even. They were. The colt was back in fine racing form.
Elaine cantered over to the dirt track, where maiden Lottery and G1 Theo were to be worked. They had awaited her to come over there so she could see how the two were doing. Lottery was a 4 year old who had been purchased from a person who used to show him after their barn burned down. He'd never been raced. Due to that fact, his pedigree had been lost. She gave the two jockeys the go ahead to run, and the two stallions raced out of the gates. She felt Rio trembled beneath her, but she stilled him with a light touch of her riding crop. Of course, Theo outran Lottery due to his G1 status in comparison to Lottery's maiden status. The head trainer, Jerry Moule, was there with her as well. "Jerry, you think we should let Lottery run through his 5th year if he doesn't break his maiden this year? I mean he has good conformation, just doesn't seem to run well. Almost like he doesn't have his stride collected quick enough..." She mused. Jerry responded with, "Let him finish out this year, see what he does for us. Then we can decide at the beginning of next year." He knew what he was talking about, as he was head trainer for a reason. "Alright. You know best Jerry." She said before waving to the duo on the track to head back to the trailer. The turf workers had already made it back to the trailer after cooling off their mounts.
"We had a great session today everyone. I just hope it pays off in the races for the first week of August..." Elaine said before grabbing Rio's trailer wraps and blanket. She quickly untacked him and covered the stallion before leading him into the trailer. The rest of the group follow suit. "Lets get these horses home and tucked into their respective stalls." She said before climbing into her truck with Kent and driving off with the trailer. The other jockeys fell into line with their own vehicles behind the truck and trailer.
