Half A Length
Allouette Divine and Jessie Coppermen
Tears of an Angel and Andrew Martin
Sam cursed something awful when Lucy rubbed her bridle on the post next to her. She stopped instantly as the man came running over to her and stood in front of her, she looked innocently at him as if she hadn’t done anything wrong. Divie whinnied laudly from her crossties and walked as far forward as they would permit her and she looked over at Sam and Lucy, the whites of her eyes could be seen and she tried to toss her head but realized that she couldn’t and quickly backed up. Sam said something harshly to Lucy before quickly going back to Divie and tightening her cinch one last time. Then quickly running over to Lucy and scolding her again when she started rubbing her bridle against the post again, muttering something about how they’d only owned her for about a month and she’d already gone through two bridles.
Andrew and Jessie came in on Girl Talk and Immortal Flight, both huffing and puffing, wisps of steam came from their flared nostrils. It had been a cool morning, reminding everyone that Summer and Fall were definitely gone. The boys slid from their mounts and came over to their next mounts for the morning.
Andrew laid a gentle hand on Lucy’s flank and then was given a leg up by Alex. Jessie followed quickly on Divie who squealed with delight knowing what time it was.
They were soon out on the track warming their horses up. Divie was practically jumping out of her coat in delight, Lucy looked as if she wanted to kill something, striking the ground with unnecessary force when she placed each hoof down.
Both of the mares loaded easily into the gate at Green Horse Fields practice track. Both of the highly regarded mares were running this week. Although it looked like Lucy’s race wouldn’t run. Neither of them that she was cross entered in as a matter of fact. However Steve was interested to see how the two mares would handle each other. Divie was going to the G3 New York Dirt Sprint, a undercard race absolutely loaded with talent and had HOTY quality horses in it. Divie would be facing off against her long time foe Optiumus Unstoppable, he’d graded up to her level now but he certainly would have his hooves full, Divie was getting stronger with every race she ran and every workout she had. Mainspring and her stablemate Attractive Flight would be joining the party as well.
The gates burst open with a clank and Lucy shot from the gate getting off to a quicker start then Divie, which was perfectly normal. Jessie and Divie got into their rhythm and were soon at Lucy and Andrew’s flank. Lucy pressed her pace quicker, she was galloping strongly and Andrew was pretty confident that the chestnut mare was making progress in her comeback. He was excited to see how she would do next season with the likes of Mastermind, Innocent Passion, Cross My Heart, and Forbidden to Fly retiring, the sprinter division was basically wide open right now. Of course the very horse working next to her may also change that. Allouette Divine wasn’t a horse anyone should have ignored, and she proved it in the Quick Cup* when she first took down Alucard and Optimus Unstoppable. Then she repeated that victory with a win in the Star Party* and eventually upsetting Optimus Unstoppable’s bid for the Sprinter Triple Crown in the Red Wine Sprint*. She was out for blood, and she wanted that next victory. The season goal had been to get her to G2 and she was two wins away from that.
The final turn was fast approaching and Divie seemed to think Lucy wasn’t going quick enough and she sped up, Lucy wanted nothing of this and the two drove each other to a faster and faster pace until the homestretch opened up in front of them. Divie flew, she decided she’d had enough of Lucy and put her workmate away into the dust. Running out with massive strides she overcame Lucy. Lucy battled back though and came back at Divie but she couldn’t get her at the wire where Divie nabbed the victory by half a length.
