Up for Whatever
Prima Donna and Hadley Grayson
Prima Donna and Hadley Grayson
Mardi Gras and Andrew Martin
Marti flung her head from side to side, displaying a spirited attitude today. Donna on the other hand pinned her ears at everyone and was acting as bratty as ever. They stepped out onto the turf track and Andrew quickly yelled and restrained Marti from bolting out from under him. Hadley giggled and started to warm Donna up, she’d never admit that she was growing to quite like Donna. They’d had a few disagreements between them when she’d first started riding her and they didn’t exactly get along well. Her half-sister Call Me Crooked was just as successful as she was and she was only a two year old. Donna was a champ in her two year old season, however this season she wasn’t in quite the same form. She had talent there was no doubt and Hadley was hoping her four year old season would go better than her 3 year old one had. She was a win away from Grade Two and no one was more determined to get her there than Hadley.
Donna would be running in the Extraordinary Cup at Green Horse Fields, and she wasn’t the only one gunning for an upgrade. Bowen Arrow was coming off of a long layoff strong and would prove to be quite the challenge, Silver Serendipity was an up and coming sprinter who was sure to give Donna a run for her money and then there was Night Goddess, who was the likely favorite. She may have been older but she would have to close very quickly to catch up to Donna.
Marti on the other hand was on a two race win-streak, she was flourishing under Grayson Meadows’ training program. She would run in the Mellifluous Stakes and then wouldn’t run until the end of december due to a lack of races in her distance range she wouldn’t run until the end of December. Her record looked rather flat but that was only because she hadn’t been raced consistently and she had been shuffled around a little bit. Her grade was no fault of her own it was simply mismanagement. Andrew patted the huge black filly as he warmed her up, she reminded him of another certain black mare he rode. She was making her own small comeback and next season she was going to be even better. With one win until she was Grade 4 he was determined to get her there by the end of the season.
Once they decided both of the fillies were warmed up they loaded into the gates and both broke cleanly from them. Marti broke a step slower than Donna which put her about a half length behind her. Hadley marveled at how long Donna’s stride was, she could never get over how smooth of a ride she was. Andrew pushed Marti to keep up with Donna and Marti responded well, both horses were soon head in head, stride in stride. They mirrored eachothers movements except for the fact that Donna was bay and just slightly smaller than Marti’s 17 hand figure.
They approached the final turn and Hadley pushed Donna faster, and Marti started to gain her momentum. They were dueling for the lead neither willing to yield to the other and they just kept going at each other. Donna of course had her ears slicked to the back of her skull, and Marti pushed hers back as well. Andrew watched cautiously waiting for one of them to bite the other but they behaved themselves. They were lost in the determination and flurry of the competition. Prima pushed on harder and Marti bore down on her neither wanted to give up the win and it was near impossible to tell who took the win at the wire. Both of them were ready for whatever was thrown at them.
