BARELY SMOKIN && TALIA SMITH
FIRE GODDESS && JAMES COLLURA
The second pair of workouts held the router juveniles that went by the names Barely Smokin and Fire Goddess. Both horses had been raced four times, and it was Harley who had the top record between the two. Carter thought for sure that it would have been Fancy who took the juvenile leaderboard, but it was the Barely A Moment son who resides at the top. Four starts and four placings for the colt, while Fancy had four starts with two of the four races had her in the top three. Harley and Fancy had become good training partners, both horses were similar in their racing tactics and it meant that they just got down to business and didn’t muck around during their training sessions.
Carter sat back at the rail and watched the two juveniles under his training going around the track doing their warm up lap, satisfied that this training session was going to go just as smoothly as every other one seemed to be. Harley looked fired up, keeping a watchful eye on Rolo and Tank, who seemed to enjoy eating grass by Carter’s side. Fancy looked like the same, quiet horse and didn’t seem fazed by her recent February slump. Come March, Carter had them both lined up for juvenile races only so that they could face their own class while building up in the ranks. Talia was aboard Harley and James on Fancy as they completed their warm up lap and cantered their way over to the gates.
Both horses only took a minute or two to be loaded, going smoothly into the gates as if it wasn’t a huge deal. Carter lucked out on gate training with his juveniles, and he only wished that all the horses he trained were like that. James stroked the chestnut filly’s neck as he lowered his goggles onto his face. Talia mimicked his motions, nodding to James before signalling the gate crew. Both jockeys grabbed a fistful of mane as the gates swung wide open, releasing the hold on the two youngsters.
Harley shot straight to the front, something Talia expected seeing as he was already fired up. James guided Fancy behind the bay colt, making sure to keep her in her stalking position all the way around their workout. They weren’t going as fast as they would in an actual race, but the competitiveness never left the two horses. Harley kept a solid hold on the bit as they surged around the first three furlongs of the workout. The small chestnut filly kept up with the colt, easily cruising along without any encouraging from James. Dirt flew in James and Fancy’s face from Harley, but it didn’t faze them as they were still keeping up with the two ahead of them. Before they knew it, they were approaching the finish line. Talia didn’t need to use the whip on Harley as they found another speed. Harley still had the lead at that point, and it looked like he was going to win it until Fancy put on another short burst of speed close to the finish line and took the win from him by half a head.
