Eulogy Rise
Dylan led the spirited young filly down the stable aisle. Eulogy Rise was already tacked up and ready to go, thanks to Ava Anderson, the owner and vet of Crimson Haven Racing, who had checked both Eavesdropper and Eulogy Rise over before their workouts. Eulogy Rise kept peeking her head into the stalls of the other horses, curious of her new surroundings. Dylan was talking to her along the way, as if he was touring her around the new stable. Lola would look at the horse behind the stall and seem to ask, "who's that?" Dylan would chuckle and answer the filly. He was glad he was assigned the new horse-him being new too. But his personality matched the filly's and he knew they would make a great team. "Come on, girl. You're going to meet your new trainer-the owner of Crimson Haven himself." Lola's ears flickered forward at the sound of Dylan's voice and her eyes seemed to light up.
"Are you nervous?" Tony asked, a smile on his face as Dylan mounted Eulogy Rise.
"Only a little bit. She should take care of me." Dylan replied, laughing.
"I'm sure she will. We've got a lot of talent to work with, so let's make it count." The team of three were standing by the gates, ready to load once Tony gave Dylan the instructions for the workout. "Let's do 9 furlongs. She's a natural closer, so she should herself back. The purpose of this workout is just to perfect her technique. Got it?" Tony started to lead Lola into the gate once he finished.
"Yep, clear as mud." Dylan smiled at the trainer to let Tony know he was joking.
"Ok, then. See you at the wire." Eulogy pranced in the loading stall, snorting and nodding her head. The gates swung open and the imaginary bell rang inside Dylan's head. The filly leaped out of the gate, seeming to find her stride. As for Dylan, he didn't have to do much; the filly managed her own pace that Dylan thought was great. When they reached the final turn, Lola immediately lengthened her stride and stretched her frame. Dylan urged her on, encouraging her to give her all. Man, Lola was fast! She gave all her effort down to the very last second.
Dylan reined her in, slowing her pace from a canter, then to a trot, then finally a walk. Tony was grinning ear to ear as Dylan pulled her to a stop. "That was perfect." He said, taking Lola's reins so Dylan could dismount.
"It was all her, Mr. Anderson." Dylan said as he pat the filly's neck. "She sure is one amazing race horse. Glad to be the one riding her for the time being."
"That's great, Dylan. Let's walk up to the stable, the track is busy today. I'm sure Ava wants to take care of Lola today. She seems to be getting a soft spot for this little trickster here." Eulogy Rise looked at the two men and she seemed to say, "who? Me?" The trainer and the jockey both laughed, then headed for the stable to allow the next workout on the track to commence.
Eavesdropper
Natasha and Eavesdropper were already on the track warming up. Natasha let the black roan stallion do his own thing for the time being, which was collected trotting in circles. She didn't know what provoked Spy to do that, but he seemed to be enjoying it. After a couple minutes of doing circles and short canter breezes, Natasha finally saw Xaria, Spy's new trainer, enter the track.
"You just missed the next top dressage prospect. I think that is going to be what Eavesdropper excels at." Natasha joked, pulling Spy to a halt and patting his neck. Xaria smiled as she stroked Eavesdropper's nose. "Well, we might have to fix that now, huh?" She said, then looked at Natasha. "Ready for today's workout? I'm eager to see how the new arrival runs."
"Oh, I'm ready. I'm just as curios as you are, so let's get going." Natasha replied, guiding Spy to the starting gate.
"Ok, then." Xaria said, following Natasha. When they stopped, Xaria went over the game plan. "Eavesdropper is a closer, but he is strategic and usually runs best with other horses to focus on. But for today, let's keep him at a slightly fast pace until the home stretch. Then let him go." Natasha nodded to signify that she understood.
Natasha and Xaria loaded Eavesdropper into the gate, the older horse waiting patiently in the stall. A few seconds went by, then the gates flew open. The black roan stallion lunged out of the gate, breaking easily. He adjusted his pace fairly quickly, keeping the speed so he wouldn't tire. Natasha thought he could go a bit faster, so she nudged him. In response, Spy picked up the speed a bit. Satisfied, Natasha relaxed and let him run the workout. When they reached the final turn, Natasha urged him on again and the stallion burst into speed. He gave it his all down to the wire, not even breathing hard. The jockeyed eased his pace, though Spy wanted to run. When she finally got him to a walk, then finally a stop, Xaria held the reins so Natasha could dismount. She slid off, a smile on her face. "He's extraordinary. Can't wait to see him race one of these weeks."
"I bet." The trainer said, leading Eavesdropper up to the barn with Natasha following along. "You guys were amazing. In fact, I think Spy and the new filly will be running in races October Week 3. Tell Dylan to clear his schedule and I know you're ready."
Natasha smiled. "I couldn't be any happier."
