A Well Deserved Break (Open to any)

The wind ruffled my hair, pulling and playing with it. The white foamy water brushed up against my feet, cooling them from the baking sun for a few moments. Seagulls laughed and played on the ocean's strong breeze. Crabs scurried into their hole, hiding from the returning high tide that would wash them into the ocean.

I sighed in content. Beside me my buckskin simply stood, her head dipped and her eyes droopy, content. I have been venturing down to the shore nearly every day, having Nut tag along with me. It seemed to relax her crazy mind. Some days she would fall to sleep, others she would simply stand and watch the waves. The first day I let her venture off to play in the waves- I was holding onto to the end of the lead rope, of course. But now she seems to enjoy the waves from the sandy bank rather then being in them.

I stood up, brushing the sand from my legs. The filly lifted her head, watching me in curiosity before I closed them with my fingers. I ran my hands down her side before they rested on her back. I laid my chin lazily on her, leaning slightly on her. She didn't seem to mind much, if at all.

The sand squeaked underfoot as Flyer and I walked along the beach, parallel to the sea. The four year old filly's ears were pricked alertly, and she watched the sand curiously, occasionally dancing away when the sand made a particularly loud squelchy noise. I smiled and stroked her shiny bay neck, ruffling her silky locks with my fingers. It was two days after the Unicorn Horn Classic, in which Flyer had placed second. It had been kind of disappointing for us, but Flyer didn't seem down at all - she knew she'd tried her best. The chestnut stallion Passionate Class had gotten lucky again and beaten her. We'll get him next time, Flyer. I said suddenly, and quite aggressively. Up ahead I could see a familiar buckskin thoroughbred. The True Nut, and her rider, who I didn't believe I'd ever actually spoken to. We approached at a gentle walk, until we were close enough to be heard. hey I called out, smiling in a friendly way. it would be good to unwind with a good chat to someone else.

I was nearly dozing when I felt the muscles on her back tense up. I peeked open my eyes to spot what Nutty saw. Another filly and handler came closer. I tightened my hands on the lead rope, unsure if my Nut will play it cool or try to start something. Though it seemed as if she would always start something.

I glanced at her. Her droopy bottom lip was taut now, creating a firm line with her top lip. Her dark lined ears pricked up in curiosity. Luckily, no evil little spark came from her eyes. I could perhaps enjoy the company while it lasted. It seemed that most of the other riders out here were more engrossed in the race then their horses. I rubbed my hand along Nut's golden neck as I turned to greet the other. Even I've gotten like that.

I knew that mare. I just couldn't remember the name. We've raced against her several times- though the outcome of each race is fuzzy. Her name escaped me, but I knew her. Hopefully Nut won't recognize her or she might think a race was about to run.

I smile at the other girl. "Hey," I replied, my tone friendly. I kept a careful eye on Nut though for now it seemed the remedy of the waves has calmed her a good deal.

I stopped Flyer a short distance from the other mare. for all i knew, she could be an aggressive one, like Rising Fury. The breeze ruffled my hair, and I closed my eyes for a few moments, content just to listen to the waves. Flyer was the same, resting one leg and ignoring the small waves that washed over her fore feet. She had her ears pricked in interest of the buckskn mare, and her nostrils flared as she took in her scent.

taking a break? i asked after a bit. i disliked silence when there was someone to talk to, unless of course i had no interest in talking to them. it was awkward.

At least the mare seemed sane. I glanced at mine. Nut appeared sane at the moment. Nonetheless I kept my eye on her. "Yup!" I replied with a small smile as the other woman broke the silence. "So many big races coming up I'd figure she'll need a little relaxation before they arrive. You?" I let the question hang in the air for a moment before I mentally slapped myself. "I'm Sam by the way," I said with a smile. "This is my Nutty," I said, giving the Thoroughbred a pat.

Nut was intense on the filly now. The little wheels in her head were turning. She dropped her head, rubbing her face on her fore limb as she thought. It was one of things I loved and hated with Nut. She could think by herself in a race if I put her in a bad spot and she can also think of ways to mess with me and others. What she would try to pull I wasn't sure but I was use to nearly anything from this mare.

Marissa. This is Flyer. i smiled again. The big races were indeed coming quickly. It was hard to believe the year was close to ending once more. same with us. Flyer is going to run in every big race she possibly can, so basically in between them, all we'll be doing is relaxing. I replied. Flyer ignored the other mare, shifting her weight to rest the other leg, allowing her lower lip to droop. I ruffled her mane affectionately, smiling when she closed her eyes in enjoyment.
