Mystical Melody and Fire Dancer
Two sisters, one small and the other intimidatingly tall, drawn together by their dam, differentiated by their sires, but similar in their love of distance and surface. Differentiated for sure by their personalities. One, the small dark bay, was bouncy and energetic, and loved to lead any field she raced in. The other, a regular shade the tall gleaming bay, was intimidating and quiet. The only way one could tell the filly's emotions was through her eyes. While the rest of her was stoic and impassive, Fire's eyes were abnormally expressive. One could read her fiery daring and will to succeed in their depths. Mel, on the other hand, was easily read. One only had to feel the impatient pull on the reins to know she was raring to go. Krystal and Henna exchanged small smiles. Both staff under Amber, they were drawn together by mutual situations, and they both rather liked each other.
The two sisters had met and sniffed each other at the track entrance; now, they trotted alongside each other, seemingly unaware of their family bonds. Naturally they wouldn't have known of their relation, seeing as family was rarely kept together in a racing stable, but marks of their dam could be seen in their stamina, and in their talent. On To Dancing's foals were talented, no doubt about it, and these two fillies were related to On To The Spotlight, grade one turf queen of their stables right now. Of course, Onya had retired, and was being replaced as turf queen by Wildly Natural. The stable always had at least one horse step up for that position; Amber was hoping that Wild Kiss, out of the same dam as Wildly Natural and of the two year old crop, would step up to take the title next, or perhaps Axis Mundae out of former turf queen Little Miss Innocent. Not that Tura's dam Wild Flower hadn't been turf queen for a couple of years either, but back to the big picture.
Mel attempted to coax a reaction out of Fire, neighing shrilly at her, while at the same time trying to break free of Henna's gentle hold so she could across the dirt track. Even though Fire was two years old, a year younger than Mel, a bystander would believe her to be the older horse. Fire carried herself with an imperious attitude that just screamed I'm-better-than-you. Unlike her two year old counterparts, she carried herself with the quiet focus of a more seasoned racehorse, even though she hadn't even had her first race yet. She appeared to currently be calculating how best to get rid of the annoying horse at her side. Krystal smiled at the filly's attitude, but decided to ignore it for now. It was just how the filly was, after all, and how could they change that?
So, how long are we racing them for Henna? What does Mel need right now? asked Krystal curiously. Henna seemed to lapse into thought for a moment, and then replied Naturally, she needs an energy outlet. She came off well from that third in the Juvenile Fillies. Just a tune up would suit her fine. She isn't racing early in the new year like a lot of other horses, so I'm willing to stretch the distance for a workout if we have to. What does Fire need for her first start? Now it was Krystal that lapsed into thought, but her reply came quickly and was A mile long gallop side by side. No racing - Fire is well tuned in that region, and just galloping will stoke the competitive fire! Henna grinned and nodded, and the two picked up a canter.
When the mile marker came, both let their horses out into a reasonably quick pace. Henna let Fire and Krystal set it, in case the two year old couldn't keep up with her more mature counterpart, but Fire seemed annoyed at the slowness. Krystal nodded at Henna, who picked it up a notch and sent Mel into her regular racing pace. Mel burst forward excitedly, wanting the feel of the wind running its fingers through her mane. Fire coolly responded to the change of pace. Krystal swore that the calculating look in Fire's eyes had become more pronounced, and guessed that she was planning how best to win the race she thought was coming. No race, Fire. Just run whispered Krystal, but of course Fire didn't understand.
They ran through the first half mile, and now Fire's desire to win was becoming tangible. Krystal was holding her in as tightly as Henna was holding Mel, which was saying something. Both girls exchanged glances as their holds became stronger and stronger, until finally both decided to just let their mounts out.
Mel accelerated quickly, absolutely flying around the last turn and to the finish. Fire accelerated a bit more slowly, due to her longer legs, but soon came sweeping up to challenge Mel. The two fillies were again side by side, both challenging the other, right up to the wire. They flashed under, two beautiful daughters of On To Dancing, with their riders laughing at just how competitive this seemingly easy workout between sisters had gotten. Fire glared at Mel, still competitive, while Mel just keep bouncing in place, excited to do it again.
