Mr Hat and Clogs and Blaze Bryant
Fresh off a second place in the Lightning Bolt Colt Stakes, Blaze was feeling pretty confident in his new horse. They'd only known each other for a month now, but it was pretty obvious that they made good partners. Blaze had been around horses his whole life, and had recently taken his uncle James up on the offer to come and work at Star Thoroughbreds, which had previously been Green Horse Stables. He had thought that he would probably be a stablehand, and maybe get to exercise ride. But STBS didn't have a rider for their new horse, and had given him a shot. Now he was Kisuke's regular rider.
The colt was a pretty decent guy. He didn't have any vices, unless you count being a complete flirt. Come on mate. Blaze said, jiggling the lead a little to wake the horse up. He'd be snoozing while being groomed and tacked up. Kisuke opened his eyes, snorted, then took a slow few steps forward, stretching as he went. They walked briskly down to the Green Horse Fields racetrack, where there were a load of other people working their horses. Blaze mounted up easily, then they walked quickly out onto the dirt track.
They moved into trot after a few minutes, sticking to the outside rail to avoid fast workers. Kisuke was suddenly energised, his trot becoming bouncy and his stride fast. It was always the same - he'd act like he hadn't had any sleep by snoozing the whole way down to the track, then as soon as they started trotting he'd wake up and be ready to go. Good boy.
After a while, they cantered. Blaze relaxed a bit more, thinking about their upcoming race. They were running in the Spring Cup G4 Dirt. There was some good competition in the race, namely Knight Rousseau and Incriminate. Those two colts were also possible Triple Crown contenders. Blaze grinned at the thought. He was riding a possible Triple Crown contender. He was!
Blaze began looking out for the pole where he was supposed to send Kisuke into gallop, and saw the it was approaching quickly. He checked around them, and seeing that all was clear, he steered the colt across to the inside rail. Kisuke tugged on the reins, eager to go. Easy, man.. Blaze murmurred. Just a bit further.. He prepared for the transition into gallop, his eyes watching the pole where he would make the cue. The four furlong pole. They were going to have a quick blowout gallop.
Go! Blaze said, cueing the colt and instantly feeling him switch to gallop. Kisuke dug in, stretching out his body and throwing his legs far out before him, bring them back under him with each powerful stride. They raced around the turn, flashing by a few slow workers. Kisuke leaned inwards strategically, then as the turn leveled out he did too. Blaze began urging him on as the two furlong pole flashed by. Kisuke dug deeper, eating up the dirt with ease.
When they passed the finish line, Blaze felt it had to have been in a blur. Go Kisukeee! He said grinning, slapping the colt's sweaty neck affectionately. He galloped the colt out, then slowed him to canter, then trot, and they left the track. They were so ready to take on the Spring Cup.
