Workouts. They were an important part of the racing world. If a horse wasn't worked out it would fall out of shape, fail to shine in races. It was an idea which did not settle well with those at Silver Stride Stables, where they aimed to give every horse the care and attention that they deserved in order to help them shine. They took on the abandoned, brought them to a new home and gave them the opportunities which they deserved.
The latest addition to the stables was a two year old colt by the name of Dark Charmer. When they had found Dark he was in the economy stables without having been raced since breaking his maiden in May. It was a sorry thing. The colt did not stand out in appearance. Certainly he was not large nor did his colour catch the eye. However, he did have one thing which placed him on their priorities list - an intelligence beyond what was normal.
When the team of three had been walking through the stables, the colt had caught the eye of Jacob Donovan and in that moment his future had been secured. The colt almost looked through the red-haired jockey, seemed to see through to the very soul, and Jacob had sensed something. What that something was Jacob could not explain but he had requested the colt be brought and so the dark bay had ended up here.
Walking onto the yard Jacob searched the stalls until he saw the head of Dark, stood calm as ever in his stall. Next door, Aztareal was kicking up a fuss for attention but it was Dark that Jacob was here for today. He would work the colt, assess what damage had been done by months of neglect, and then begin work on fixing him. Alicia had already tacked the colt up, knowing Jacob would be here, and so he was all ready to go as Jacob walked in and took the colt's reins.
For a moment, the colt's head tossed with excitement. There was a gleam in those dark eyes. Fire, spirit. The colt knew this was a racing barn, he could hear the pounding of flints on the nearby track and he was ready to get back out. He pawed impatiently at the ground before following the red-haired jockey. Exactly what the colt was thinking was unclear, but he was thinking. As Jacob looked at the colt he had that ever-thoughtful glaze in his eyes. A sharp mind that might lead to a sharp racer, or a distraction that they would need to work out?
Jacob mounted the bay colt and urged him forwards. With a slight struggle, the colt was gated and when the gates were opened their exit was a little on the slow side. Beneath them, the colt's flints struck the dirt track. A steady, safe rhythm. The colt allowed himself to fly across the track as if it were second nature and as the wind whipped the jockey's face he felt a certain amount of freedom. The colt seemed to be taking joy in the race and, as they rounded a corner, Jacob pushed the colt. Again, it took a while, but soon the colt was steaming down the straight at amazing speeds, his flints causing a thunder as they stormed onwards.
By the end the colt was out of breath. He had pushed hard and had been out for a while, but Jacob could already sense the colt's potential and soon enough they would tap into that potential and release a star from the unassuming colt's form.
