Well, that had been random. Tobias had not expected Ford coming ahead of the field in his last race and securing a win. Oh, he was sure glad of it, but it had been really, really random.
That being said, they weren't going to let this spark die. Something had clicked with Ford. Something had started and they were going to keep it flying into his next races. They weren't going to let him fizzle out. He was too pretty for that. Certainly, if he made it, he'd be an appealing stud - a racing reputation coupled with a golden, creamy but not quite palomino coat and white mane and tail? Yes, Fordy-Ford was handsome, that was for sure.
"You're pretty, but you can't focus off the track for nothing, can you?" Tobias muttered as Ford Model T fidgeted and pulled as they waited for the turf track to be free. They were jumping into a new pool, a G5 pool, and that represented the last of Tobias' maidens to lose their racing virginity and get there. In fact, only one of their current string at PHS hadn't broke their maiden. It was looking to be a promising stable debut; maybe Miles Muse would pilot this thing to stand alongside Star Thoroughbreds or Stride of Perfection Stables.
"Eight furlongs, remember that." Connor broke the jockey's train of thought. "He's a front, but don't let him rush himself into it how he likes to try to do. Also, if it starts to rain, cut it out and stop." Connor (and everyone at Prison Hill) had heard of running App through the rain. App could, and did manage it perfectly, but Ford wasn't quite there yet. "And also, it's shaping to be a large field. Start him near the outside, he needs to to get the pacing down." With that, they were headed to the gates. The mid morning sun was high in the sky, and while chilly, there was no sign of a violent thunderstorm on the way.
After a little struggle to get Ford into the gate, they were primed and ready to go. Tobias had already worked out the plan of attack with Ford. The start was no issue for this horse. That had been ironed out. But rather, it was his pacing down in the middle, where he was moving in ahead of the pack, and keeping him steady there. Ford loved to run, and run he would, but his ADHD demeanour meant he wanted to run now over stretching it out for later. Tobias knew the colt had the stamina, it was just a matter of getting it practiced and tapped into.
The gates flew open, and with it, Ford. His muscles rippled, and his head pounded. Tobias felt that all-to-familiar adrenaline rush as Ford did moved, and grinned. There was really a car under there somewhere, an engine, a spark, combustion, and zoom, the rest of equine kind would be left in the dust of the Model T(horoughbred) before they knew it. That, after all, was what happened last time. Ford had come out of nowhere.
It took all of Tobias' power to hold Ford down, at an appropriate pace against the imaginary field. Tobias knew how fast he ought to go, and they were there. Ford kept pulling and straining, frothing at the mouth as he ran, but Tobias would have none of it - he wasn't giving an inch for Ford, or the horse would (literally) take a mile. What good could be said was that Ford's gallop was collected, and not frazzled. He had the conformation for the job, that was certain.
Ford fought a little less once they hit three furlongs, and less still at five, having realized Tobias meant business. His mane and tailed streamed out behind his carmel-colored body, contrasting with the greens of the turf and whites of the rail. They moved in from the outside to the middle, and Tobias let Ford accelerate, though still kept him under tight control. He could feel the power welling up, ready to explode at the last second, as well as the discipline that was being imbued to wait for the last little bit to give it his all. As a front, Ford could lose the competition well before that point, or at the very least, outrun a tired field from the front to start with, but not without pacing.
Those last two furlongs came in a heartbeat, and Tobias let the colt at it, and even added the stick for good measure. They crossed the line at top speed, and came back down to speak to the trainer, who was sitting around in a wifebeater, with a stopwatch and a cigarette. His phone looked like it had been thrown a few feet away.
"Erin rejected you again, didn't she?" Tobias put it all together.
"She knows she's hot." Connor grumbled. "She won't have anything romantic to do with me, too. Oh but you wait, Tobie. I'll get the girl yet."
"How about the time?" Tobias asked, changing the subject. Erin was hot, and if they didn't subject change soon they'd stay awfully distracted.
"Oh, yeah. That's hot too, but not quite as good as Erin."
