Early morning and it was so cold that breathe could be seen like smoke before each and every individual, human or otherwise, as the water in each breathe condensated in the colt outdoor air. Typical for the time of year, when snow could soon be expected to grace the tracks and turn the world into a winter wonderland. Yet it was at this time of year that, for some unknown reason, the Dubai cup was held. Why now rather than in summer when the sun might at least try to mimic the weather of Dubai it was unknown but that was how it was.
It was one of the years big dirt races and Silver Stride Stables would be entering one of their stars - beautiful Moondance, otherwise known as Mona. The bay filly had been performing well and would soon be on her way to true stardom, a feat which would only be helped were she to do well in the upcoming race. After this it would be on to the world cup, but here she would be able to proveherself as one of the best fillies around to run on dirt.
With her head held high, the proud filly seemed to know what was expected of her. She moved toward the track in her usual elegant way beside her tiny jockey and continued onwards until she was pulled to a halt for the jokey to mount. Today they were not going to gallop, today they were going to take things more slowly while still doing their best to keep the filly fit and in shape for the big race. As such, the gaits they would use were walking, trotting and cantering - just to allow the filly to stretch her legs and feel the wind in her black mane.
Of course, any ride on the filly was a joyous one. She moved well, was incredibly responsive and her beauty made her astounding. She was the kind of horse that Alexia might have purchased ifshe had followed her parents into the showing world. great confirmation and looks which drew the eye, her eagerness to please and show off would have taken her far. Butthat was not where Alexia had chosen to go, nor was it where Mona had ended up. But perhaps when retired from racing she, like her father before her, would find her place in the showing world.
The eager filly responded well to each and every command given in the exercise period and gave a lot of affection afterwards. Only time could tell if the filly would earn her place among the stars this year.
