Hooooooooooooooooooly banana! Tobias hadn't been able to believe his senses as they rode in front of the pack at the breeder's cup. It was amazing! App had come out of nowhere, an unknown stable and unknown bloodlines, and won the day. Now, newly three and going into the G4 races, App had great expectations set on his shoulders. But Tobias was sure the colt could handle it. He was going to shake things up, he knew it.
The spring breeze was refreshing, and not too cold, and Tobias smiled into it as he headed over to the grey colt, who was standing well for Skylark. "Let's get him going." Skylark grinned. It was the first workout of the year, for the first race Executioner's Apprentice was running in the year. PHS only had two brand new two year olds, neither of which Tobias was going to be dealing with, so that he could work on getting the three year olds even stronger. It would be a while before Prison Hill was going to be competing at a larger scale, but not a long time before they had an elite group. "Ten furlongs. Hold him steady." Tobias nodded to Skylark's words, got a leg up, and gave his shoulders a few rolls. App snorted, and shifted his weight back and forth, ready to get going.
"Let's rock this crowd." Tobias gave the dapple grey racehorse a pat and headed off to the gate. App looked eager, his dark eyes alight. They were loaded into the gate without any complaint from the horse, whose nostrils flared. He lowered his goggles, and looked out over the turf. "Let's do this."
There was a pause, and the gate sprang open, and with them, App. He was good at starting, and he needed to be to jump right up with the leaders. He'd tail right behind them, always present, which is what he did with the imaginary field, and strike near the end, when they were buckling under the pressure he kept on the leaders. It worked like a charm in the cup, and hopefully it would here too. They'd keep fighting their way up - Executioner's Apprentice wasn't a Bank on Silver quite yet, after all, though hard work and determination.
App was in good balance and speed as they ran, the curve coming up fast, at roughly seven furlongs. It would mean they'd have to put on all the pressure, fast, right off the curve. Tobias was confident they could do it. App showed no signs of anything amiss. He ran with an eagerness to him, and eagerness that wasn't so much the random enjoyment of a two year old, but a knowledge of running, and an enjoyment thereof. It made Tobias grin. They could do this. He knew they could. Ten furlongs was at the upper side of his distance range, but he'd run it before, and his versatility in matching, yet always pressuring, the leader meant he never ran faster than he had to until all holds were let go, and then he liked to win by a margin.
They rounded the corner, App's gait a solid, steady one, and with three furlongs left, let it fly. The stick was added, then his head given, and App obliged with ease and speed. They passed the ten furlong mark practically flying, and Skylark was grinning at them once they came to a halt nearby him.
"And what a year this will be!" Skylark grinned. "I think we'll be giving some folks a run for their money."-----------------------
