Spitting Image works for Misty Maiden Stakes
She was a big showoff, and for a good reason. The pretty bay was obviously talented, and we had faith she would break her maiden in her next start, the Misty Maiden Stakes. Image had started five times, and placed second in four of those. Her workout times had improved since her last race, and considering the small field, it should be easy to get a win here.
Blaze crouched low over her neck, holding her firmly at a strong, steady gallop as they pounded down the backstretch from the six furlong marker. Clumps of turf and soil flew up behind them, and Blaze began to contemplate the competition. In gate one was two year old colt Wannabe Hero. From what Blaze had heard, the colt had raced only on dirt so far and might not favour the turf. Gate two would hold the colt's stablemate, also two year old filly Feline Frenzy. She had yet to place in the top three, but had raced only on turf. Image had drawn gate three, and was so far the final entrant to the race. But there could still be late entries.
Image hugged the rail around the turn, and then began to dig in and accelerate quickly as Blaze began to urge her on. She stretched her body and her legs as far as they would allow as she reached forward faster and faster. Blaze continued to urge her. She had more to give, and she gave it. With a final burst of speed, Image surged past the finish triumphantly. Blaze punched a fist into the air, grinning widely. Spitting Image was ready to win.
