Another morning had come and Matthias had a surprise for the team. He had been working away secretly behind the scenes in order to procure the stable a new star, and a star it was. He was sure that with bloodlines like the ones he was about to bring into the stable, as well as a two year old season like the one the filly had run, that this would not be an unwlecome addition. In fact, he was sure that the team at Silver Stride Stables had the ability to turn the new addition into a star. So just who was that wonderful little surprise?
The filly was a powerful little thing, a sprinter with a big personality and boodlines of gold. By Warlock and out of Little Miss Innocent she was the twin sister of Stride Of Perfection's Axis Mundae and an amazing talent on both surfaces. Beltane's owner had, sadly, disappeared in the summer of the previous year and she had not been raced since then. However, by the time her owner had disappeared she had four wins to her name, five seconds and three thirds. In a fifteen race career she had placed out of the top three only three times. That gave her an eighty percent consistency, something on which they could easily build.
As he sat in the office waiting for the others to arrive he had a great deal of excitement running through him. At midnight last night he had been here, unloading her into a stable around the back - away from other horses and the eyes of those who did not need to know. All he needed now was for the team to roll in so he could make his announcement. Alexia arrived first, curious as to why he had called an unarraged meeting, quickly followed by Jacob and they were soon joined by the two sisters - Alana and Tanya. With the team assembled, it was time.
"So you are probably all wandering why I have called this meeting. You are probably also wandering why I have been so secretive of late. The truth is, I have been working to secure a horse and as I could not guarantee we would get her I didn't want to get your hopes up." he paused, looking around the assembled group. "The horse in question is a filly by the name of Beltane, a grade four three year old sprinter. I was thinking of putting her under Tanya, who has no three year old rides. Now you have probably all heard of her and her twin sister, Axis Mundae, who are the offspring of Hall Of Fame Little Miss Innocent which is why this is so exciting." smiles spread through the room, Tanya ever squeaked a little in excitement. Of course it was exciting - how often did you get a nice three year old dual surfaced horse with achievements walking through your door.
"So, with the announcement out of the way, you can all get back to work. Tanya, I think you need to meet your new partner. Come on." Standing up he grinned at Tanya before walking out of the office and around to the back stables, leaning against the black filly's door. "Here she is. A beauty, right?" The black filly was stood at the back of her stable, blaze-adorned head turned toward the door where her new visitors had arrived. She did not rush forward to greet them, but she did not appear to be attacking them either which was always a good sign. "She can be a little temperamental. I thought we'd take her down to the track for a run, what do you think?" Tanya agreed. Of course Tanya agreed. Matthias giving her a ride like this meant she was finally a true part of the team. She was going to ride a horse which might one day be a star.
The black filly definitely showed herself to be energetic. As the grooms tried to put her tack on she was flying around the stable, trying to make things difficult for them. But once they seemed to be flustered enough she settled down and allowed them to put her tack on. Playful little thing, Matthias had heard she liked to play with those around her but he had just seen how true that was. She had to be in charge of everything, including when her tack got put on apparently.
Leading her down to the track was fun. Picking up on where she was going, the filly started to pull at the bit, determined to get to the track as quickly as possible. Her audits were pressed forwards, her tassel snapping at her rump in impatience. Following her nipping one of the handlers they started to jog, allowing the filly to trot, in order to avoid her aggravation. As soon as they were at the track, Tanya was able to mount and gating occured. In the absence of other horses this was easy, although Matthias had been warned it would not be so easy if there were other horses due to the filly's aversion to other equines. But he had no need to worry Tanya or the handlers just yet, he just wanted to see how she ran.
The gates opened, the filly broke at amazing speed and settled into a comfortable pace. It was not the frenzied pace of the usual front runner but more reserved, almost thoughtful. As if she was thinking ahead, something which very few front runners seemed to do. She had a wonderful movement, determination seemed the radiate from her and soon she was throwing herself toward the ever-looming post. Tanya felt she had to do very little to guide the mare, except to drive her forwards in their bid to gain the post. It was a great feeling as they passed the post, she was sure her and the filly could go far.
