There was just something silly and endearing about the colt to Moses. His name, his color, his ADHD - it was all just a little bit silly. A little bit of silly in a world where there were no second chances, but Ford Model T was just out there to have fun, and wasn't half bad at it. No, he wasn't about to win the Breeders Cup yet, but he was decent. His brother had started the engine, running Ford's two year old season, and now Moses, the younger of the two, would be left to drive the car.
"You ready for him? He's a change from sweet ol' Solo." Connor, Ford's trainer, remarked as he gave Moses a leg up onto the colt.
"I'll be fine." Moses grumbled. He as going to make this work yet, he was sure. Ford could run, it was just a matter of making it happen.
"Careful in the gate." Connor advised, walking alongside the light chestnut and rider. "And keep in mind he won't stand for you in there until you're on him about it all the time." Moses nodded, and Connor set off for his clipboard and stopwatch.
The spring sun shone down on them, and Moses looked over the turf. Seven furlongs. He could do this, he was certain. The jockey and the racecarhorse went into the gate, and sure enough, Ford did not stand still. Moses was forced to use every aid nearly constantly while pulling down his goggles and getting him in order to settle him into the gate, and then, in a second or two, they were off!
Ford broke out of the gates very easily, like an explosion almost. Moses knew this was one of Ford's biggest assets - the horse was of average speed for one in his grade, but he broke faster than nearly all of them, and got out in the front fast. Not only did this give him a "head start" so to speak, it also potentially cut off those breaking slower in the gates next to him, especially if he went for the inside early and kept his lead, he could cut off much of the field and increase his starting bonus. Moses intended to work this to the fullest.
The duo dove for the inside, keeping steady and keeping a strong pace, one that was almost too fast for the distance, and ate up the turf. Seven furlongs was a distance he'd run before, so Moses had no worried about that. All they needed to do was keep their head up and keep going, and take the turn in balance.
The bend in the track came up quick, and Moses put all his power into getting Ford Model T around the curve. It wasn't perfect, but the colt didn't go down or slow very much at all, so it was passable. For once, Moses wished for a little more weight he could throw the other way to get Ford around there faster, but less weight paid off the the straight, or so Tobias liked to say.
Six furlongs. They passed the maker and Moses grinned, giving Ford the stick and his head all at once. The colt delighted in it, and took off, running like...a racecar? There were just too many automobile allusions for Moses to make, but he neglected them for controlling the colt insofar as to keep him going in a straight line, which Ford seemed a bit loathe to do.
They crossed the seven furling marker, and then they decelerated, looping back around to Connor, who shrugged. "Not bad for your first go on him. Let's go up from here, yeah?"
