SILENT FURY AND STRIKE A POSE WORK FOR KENTUCKY OPEN*[/b] Marissa shrugged, sliding off Silence as they came to a halt at the barns, then giving the colt a fleeting kiss on the nose. The competition is definitely superior, in terms of success this year. But I know that Silence isn't any less than he was last year. Posie has taken her time getting used to you, but you're nearly getting her best now. You never know how the race will play out.. Although I'd hate to see it happen, someone could fall off, a horse could get injured.. you never know. She shrugged again, and smiled at him. Blaze nodded, knowing she was right but still doubtful of their chances. They'd know the outcome in a matter of days. Hopefully, luck would be on their side.
The pair had so far had disappointing seasons. Not for lack of trying - bad luck kept getting in the way of the win for both. Strike A Pose wasn't exceptionally talented, but she could do very well for herself when she felt like it. The filly had started 10 times this season, with the majority being places in the top three, but hadn't yet won. Silent Fury had a similar record, with six starts this year. He was a talented colt, but for some reason was just losing by a little bit every time. Hopefully, all this would change in the Turf Triple Crown.
The Kentucky Open was in a matter of days. The race, ten furlongs on turf, was the first leg of the TTC. There were only four entrants, but the competition was fierce. Executioner's Apprentice and Wild Kiss were the other two. Both were racing better than Poser and Silence, which was worrying. Strike A Pose would only be running in this race, of the three, as ten furlongs was all she could stay for. The filly was more a miler. Silence would be running in all three.. and boy, we hoped he'd win 'em all, too.
The colt was out of the famous Rising Fury. He was related to some fine racehorses, indeed. His eldest sister, for example, had come away with the win in the Breeder's Cup Marathon last year, and seemed to be racing better than ever this year with wins in four out of her five starts, including the Unicorn Horn Dirt. Furious Passion, the sibling above Silence, was last years Triple Crown Champion, and the winner of the Dubai World Cup. Silence's sire was Grand Silence, who had won the Breeder's Cup Marathon and the Cox Plate in his day. He was the sire of turf mare Sillenia and turf colt Worldbreaker. So yes, Silent Fury had alot to prove.
They galloped on the turf track, leaving each furlong behind quickly with ground eating strides. Silent Fury was slightly ahead, dominant as always. Strike A Pose's nose kept in line with his flank; she was game if he was. The rounded the turn, leaning in to the rail, without losing speed. As the turn leveled out, Silent Fury began to make his move. His stride lengthened, became even stronger. He began to pull away noticeably, as Strike A Pose started her run.
She seemed to be keeping up, for a moment, but the filly was not as quick or as strong as the colt, and he pulled ahead to beat her by two lengths. Grinning, Marissa slowed Silence back through his paces. There was no doubt he was just as good as last year, if not better. Rotten luck was absolutely to blame. Blaze slowed up Poser, looking out of breath. He slapped the filly's sweaty neck affectionately, and rubbed behind her ears. As her breathing returned to normal, she let out little noises of appreciation.
Well.. I think we're as ready as we'll ever be. Blaze said, sounding a little doubtful.
