Mia had definitely been improving. After a slow start at the beginning of the year she now had a win to her name, as well as a third place in a major race - the Magic Millions Fillies Turf Sprint. It had been a good turn of events for Mia, and with any luck her improving results would continue to do just that. With a fifty percent consistency level she was not yet at the top of the game, but with every race she came in the top three she got one step closer to being there. For Mia, the next race was the I'm Special Stakes - a five furlong sprint on the turf for two year olds of any grade from maiden and up.
There were six entrants in the race, with Mia drawn for gate one. In gate two was Spitting Image, the filly who had placed second in the Magic Millions Fillies Turf Sprint, from Star Thoroughbreds. Spitting Image had been performing amazingly well, only placing out of the top three once in eight races, and was probably going to be one of the favourites on race day. In gate three was Oak Hill Farm's maiden Strictly A Hero - a colt from amazing lines who had yet to show himself to be a winner. In gate four, an amazing colt by the name of Royal Assassin from Prison Hill Stables was another likely to prove a threat to their hopes in this race. Gate five held an unraced colt by the name of Plumbum, from unknown lines and without a record it was hard to tell how he might perform. Finally, in gate six, was Nochebuena - a maiden who was starting to find her hooves.
Jacob had quite the job, trying to get Mia into a place where she would perform well, and so it was definitely time for a workout. He'd asked the staff to get her ready and down to the track before going to seek out the trainer, Matthias. A friend and his boss, Matthias was definitely interested in seeing the two-year-olds improve and this was the way to do it. Workouts, trainer feedback, more workouts. That and race experience tended to be the things that made a difference, and Mia seemed to have been responding well - this was a chance to help her improve further and anywhere from third place and above would be the way to go in order to continue the improvement.
Matthias had agreed to come and watch, so had taken his place in the stands where he would be able to see everything. Jacob had already mounted the handful of a filly, and gating was about to occur. Which, luckily for the jockey and the handlers alike, was not a difficult task. In fact, it was an easy task. Mia had no issues with the gate, despite being a troublesome young filly, and entered it well. She didn't even kick up a fuss when the gate was closed behind her and she ended up boxed in.
So far, so good. But this was only the beginning. They needed to push hard in order to prove themselves talented enough to be true winners and once the gates opened Mia flew out, her pace high and her focus complete. She was obviously a sprinting front runner, with her fierce need to be in the front and run like a bat out of hell. Each short stride propelled her further forwards, each stride pushed her toward her goal. It did not take her long, pushing into the final two furlongs quickly and with ease before really throwing all she had into the last stretch. She managed to speed up... Slightly. She was a filly that relied on her advantage more than being able to make up distance in the stretch and she didn't need to be great at pushing her speed in the home stretch. They passed the post and Jake looked into the stands, at Matthias. It was time for their post-workout chat.
