Desi had not yet broken her maiden, but she was definitely improving. The black filly had gone from coming in last place in her first three races to getting two third places in her most recent starts. It seemed to be the beginning of an upward curve, but her jockey was not going to leave that to chance. Desi needed a workout, and she was going to get one. No matter what, Desi would improve because she had the talent to be a star if only she could break her maiden and get a few wins under her belt.
She handled well, for a two year old. You had to give her that. Despite being a pain in the ass with other equines she seemed to have an inbuilt respect for humans and she tried to behave for them. Of course, she was young. Easily distracted. There were times that she forgot herself and made a mistake, where she became awkward and difficult. But that was all par for the course. She was a two year old racing thoroughbred for christ sake, these things were not supposed to be easy!
Following her third placings in the Magic Millions and the April Maiden Turf it was time to kick things up a notch. Alexia had ran her plan past the trainer, Matthias, and he had of course said yes - he trusted the judgement of his staff, he knew they were all behind the stable and fighting to be the best. He knew that they were all trying to get the wins and make their horses stars. Their workout would be simple - a nine furlong breezing on the turf.
Desi was full of energy and enthusiasm. As they had reached the track her head had raised and she had started to fidget, which had made mounting difficult. However, she gated well - the two year old being more than used to the gates following the training programme Matthias gave to every prospect at the stable. Something which would be started for the current years prospects shortly. Not all horses took to the gates, but those that did became a lot easier for the staff to handle at the course on race day.
As the gates opened Desi flew out onto the track, her pace quick as she moved toward the rail. Her dark mane flew behind her as Alexia navigated the filly and it was clear to see the concentration on the jockey's face. She wanted to do the best by the filly, and it was a tough time of year for a horse to break their maidens, but she really wanted to get the filly started so that she's be ready for big races later on in the year.
Each firm stride carried them forwards, her muscular limbs working hard to propel them around the course at a good speed. As they came into the final few furlongs Alexia bit her lip, lowered her position as she cracked the crop on the filly's rump several times. She filly propelled forwards - her speed increasing as they soared down the straight. Stride by stride they came closer to the post. Stride by stride the end of the workout came closer and race day seemed to be looming. They passed the post quickly and Alexia smiled slightly. Desi would do fine.
