When it comes to big races you can always guarantee their will be strong competition, and the Acorn Stakes in May week one was no different. Over eight furlongs on the dirt the race is open only to three year old fillies who have broken their maiden. Of course, this leaves it open to a wide number of competitors, which is just what the organisers, and the crowds, want. This year the race saw five entrants and very strong competition. The favourite for the race was Silverianna, of Star Thoroughbreds, closely followed by Afterglow. Also entered into the race were Seraphim, Golden Grove and Quintessential.
Anyone who has been following Afterglow and Silverianna know that the pair have a strong rivalry and come head to head on a regular basis due to their similar preferences. Starting with the breeder's cup last year it seems that whenever one gets a win the other makes it up in the next race, both refusing the budge and allow the other to pass.
With the Acorn Stakes being the first leg of the prestigious Triple Tiara, won by the impressive Born To Soar last year, the stakes were certainly high and it is reported that both stables put a lot of work into making sure that their entrants were ready for the stiff competition they would face. In the end, however, it was Afterglow who took the win. We spoke to her jockey, Alana after the race.
"Afterglow is a strong horse. She has good lines and a good temperament for racing. When it comes to the track she loves it and thrives in the competetive atmosphere. She was on top form today, we've been working hard with her and we just move on from here. She'll next be racing at the Mother Goose Stakes in week three." We were unable to get comment from the Star Thoroughbreds team regarding their second placed Silverianna.
