FIRE DANCER AND KRYSTAL YHATE
DASHING IN THE FIRELIGHT AND HENNA TURATH
FIRE'S WORKOUT FOR THE MOTHER GOOSE STAKES
FIRE'S WORKOUT FOR THE TRUE ENOUGH MEMORIAL STAKES
It had been a tough year for the Fire duo. Though completely unrelated, the two shared the same barn name of Fire, and they were more similarities coming to light as time went on. Just as the other Fire had been last year, Fire Dancer held a mere two wins and a record that did not look overly pretty on paper. Despite her lines, which were amazing, she had been flagging. She had only placed out of the top three twice this year and had a fair bit of experience, but she wasn't garnering the wins either. Similarly to Fire Dancer, Dashing in the Firelight had been struggling this year. Last year she had been a star. This year, she was flagging. Henna had recently put in no less than three workouts. This was the only workout specifically aimed at the True Enough Memorial, and they intended to make it count.
A quick sprint alongside each other would more than seal the deal. Both Fires were on good form, and this would help them keep it coming. The competitive fires burned within each of them. Krystal and Henna exchanged a quick glance. Within Henna's gaze, a fierce need to win and show the world shone like a beacon of need. Losing with Flash in the Derby had hit her hard. Being slandered, as Henna had put it, was even worse. She had a lot riding on her, and was getting very stressed out. The fact that her other favorite mount, Dashing in the Firelight, wasn't doing well anymore was really telling on her. Krystal couldn't help but wonder when the jockey would crack. She definitely would begin to if there were no good results after the next race. As for Krystal, she was recovering from the selling of her colt Strictly Royal to brand new Kacey Hill Racing. She hoped he was doing well, and was actually functioning better with only five mounts to ride, but she was watching Henna jockey eight mounts and feeling a bit left out. But she did envy the fear of losing that haunted Henna a lot nowadays.
The two bay females trotted side by side down the dirt track. Dashing in the Firelight looked like a picture of power, and powerful she was. She did not stop at anything in her quest to achieve, and was the bravest horse Henna had ever ridden. As for Fire Dancer, the filly towered over the mare, and with her height came an intimidating aura. She imperiously ignored the other Fire and focused purely on herself, surveying the track as though it was her domain while belatedly following any commands Krystal gave her with a lazy air about her. The filly had been running a lot this year, and was racking in experience. She was becoming a tougher runner, and Krystal knew that their four year old season would be amazing due to this experience. Despite the limited wins, Fire was showing some talent, and Krystal was excited to unveil this talent.
The respective fields for the two races had come up tough. Afterglow, Erin Shore, Silverianna and Naturally Charismatic were the competition in the Mother Goose Stakes for Fire Dancer, while Dashing in the Firelight would be facing her half sister Moondance, Sillenia, Xalbadora and Furious Passion. Henna was dead set on not letting these horses get in her mare's way, and was hopeful for a comeback. She had worked Fire hard, and she wanted her work to be rewarded. Fire had been working harder than many horses out there recently, and she had been working completely, too. There was no half-doing it out here. Henna was committed to the cause. And just like Henna, Krystal was also committed. Unified by this common need, the two women began to canter, and then the workout truly commenced.
Sprinting. It was fast, it was powerful - and it was full of all consuming joy. Henna let a brief smile flit across her face as her Fire indulged in speed. Next to her, Krystal and her Fire were moving smoothly. Fire appeared less imperious than her usual self, and Krystal's soft smile was a reflection of this change. Both horses were midpackers, so nobody was upset about being alongside the other, and were content to wait for a little bit before going for the gold. But they had only half a mile to run in, so the jockeys urged their horses on. Dashing in the Firelight picked up on the workout plan first, and let it rip. She poured on the speed, and would have left the other Fire behind had it not been for a quick prod from Krystal and a burst of comprehension from the horse. With a quick burst of speed, Fire ran forward and caught up to the older horse.
The sprinting battle was taken to new heights as they curved into the final part of it. Time passed quickly aboard a flying horse. Krystal and Henna continued to urge their thoroughbreds on as the final marker approached. The females kept giving and giving, with Dashing in the Firelight just barely inching ahead. Fire Dancer, true to her sire Native Flame, was not going down without a fight, and just kept on pushing for it. But time ran out for the young three year old, and Dashing in the Firelight won by a nose. But pulling up, it was like both jockeys acknowledged the other's victory and not their own. Krystal sent a soft smile at Henna, who merely nodded with a small smirk of her own before her face faded into its previous mask of mercilessness. The two females had proven their capacity and were ready to go for their next races.
