The dark bay colt stepped on to the dirt, pricking his ears tall. He looked around anxiously. Backing up ever so slowly, he tossed his head and started side stepping. I pushed him forward. "Pack up," I said, as he broke into a rhythmical trot. My brown hair fell in my face, so I brushed it out. "Alice!" I shouted. The blonde girl came out, hair still curled from last night, but she was holding her arm. "What have you been doing then?" I said. "I think I've broken my wrist, you'll have to ride Roy in the race today." I looked at her with disbelief. "I need you to get me a crop- then go to hospital." I said.
Alice walked inside, and using her good hand, she pulled a short black crop out, with gold writing that said Jacey on it. Alice passed it up to me and I smiled, as to thank her. "Lets go!" I said energetically. The colt began to back up and side step. "Roy, come on. I know your name is Strictly Royal, but your not on strictly come dancing love." I heard Alice laugh from inside the barn. She poked her head out, giggling.
I then kicked the colt and he shot forward. "That woke you up." I squeezed him into an energetic canter, as he pricked his ears and bounced with his stride. I smiled and continued to push him forward. We came to the six furlong pole and I began to give him some more mouth... then we came to the five furlong pole. One kick... I tell myself. Just one kick. I kicked and he flew forward into an energetic gallop. He pricked his ears tall and carried me and himself across the dirt.
He continued round the far turn, changing his leads. Roy was flying, faster than I'd ever felt him go. I began to push him to extend his stride, and he excelled. As we came round the home turn into the stretch, I felt him beginning to tire. I didn't let him. I pushed him- we flew past the two furlong marker and I pulled him up. We were only going three furlongs. I patted him on the neck and trotted him round, and walked- just to cool him down. "Good lad. It's hard keeping top speed for a while."
