The huge bay colt stepped on to the turf. It wasn't all new to him. He'd previously been training with his old owner, I'm unsure of the name, but she was a lovely person. So was this new colt. Danny, that's his name. Danny Boy, as I call him. I think he likes it. This colt was something. He shines like a star in the sky.
As we entered the track, the horses hooves sunk in to the turf. We'd had some light rain overnight, but nothing to major. I sat tall on the big colt, and the brisk wind blew a breeze right through me. It's the kind of wind I like to call a lazy wind. It's a lazy wind because it doesn't go round you, it goes straight through you.
I halted Danny, and he pricked his ears tall, and looked around. Welcome home, buddy. I said to him, patting his neck. Alice walked out of the barn, a grin on her face. So is this our new Grand Silence colt? She asked. I smiled and nodded. I walked him in a circle whilst speaking to Alice, and squeezed him into a trot.
Alice watched patiently from behind the barrier. She was still smiling. We knew we'd got something special. This would be our new dual surface colt, and the first ever one at this wonderful stable. We weren't brilliant, but I knew with a bit of oomph, we could produce something big. The colt walked forward, calmly.
I stood in my stirrups as he broke into a rhythmical trot. We trotted up the turf. He kept his ears pricked, and chomped on his eggbutt snaffle. Bits were harsh things, but Danny didn't seem to mind. As we got to the top of the stretch, I gave myself a pep talk. I wanted to see how fast this colt could go without me pushing him.
I heard Alice from my radio behind me. My turn as chief trainer, haha. Okay, so, two furlongs, no pushing, just see how fast he can go. She said. I gave her the thumbs up from the top of the stretch as I picked up my crop from the belt of my jeans. I turned him in and pushed him into the first three strides of gallop.
He bounced away, ears pricked, on to the correct lead. His stride was long and he stretched out from every inch of his bay pelted body, from tail to toe. I sat there, defying gravity as we flew through the first furlong. Still pricking his ears and striding along, the colt changed his leads, and picked up his speed even more. He was a very energetic colt.
Danny knew what he was doing. I let him go- it was like twenty one seconds of pure symphony. We flew down the stretch, and we whizzed past the finish line. I stood almost instantly and pulled him up. Good boy, I patted his neck as I brought him back down his paces. Alice walked over, stop block in her hand. Twenty one and one fifth, She said. I grinned, patting the colt on his neck. He let out a long energetic whinny.
