[/blockquote][/blockquote]The mornings are getting colder. I look outside every morning, and the temperature has dropped by almost a whole degree every day. Hopefully soon we’ll get snow… I love snow, and I’m sure the horses will love it when they are out in the paddock playing in it. Obviously I’ll keep the colts separate from the fillies, but they’re going to love it.
Romeo has his ears pricked, yet again. It was the morning of the big race. I hoped he could maintain his running streak… he was doing brilliantly so far. Alice… I heard a voice from behind me. Turning around, I looked to see Lucy, my little sister. Hey Lucy… are you ready to ride him today? I asked.
She gave a nod, there was no question about it. Lucy. My sixteen year old sister. She was coming to stay with me for a bit. Lucy left school last month, and it was time to see what her riding skills could produce over here on the track. Stroking the colts nose, Lucy smiled. Romeo pricked his ears and stuck his neck out, nuzzling Lucy’s hand.
I smiled cheekily and grinned, stroking him on the nose. Lucy got her hat and crop, before leading him out of the stall. Leg up… three, two, one. I said, throwing Lucy on board. She looked at me before smiling. I’m gonna love this. She said, squeezing Romeo on to the track.
Romeo bounced energetically onto the track. Lucy gave him a little kick, and he broke into a trot. Doing her bumps, Lucy laughed. Never thought I’d be doing this, She said to Romeo, patting his neck as she did so.
She stood in her stirrups and squeezed him forward into an energetic canter. The colt responded instantly, and Lucy smiled. She felt like she was flying. Along the backstretch, she loosened the grip on the reins and let him go. He bounced onto the correct lead and pricked his ears, lowering his head and going with the flow.
She pushed him on a little bit more, and he flew down the home stretch. Lucy urged him along. Oh my god, this is the fastest I’ve ever galloped! Romeo tugged the reins and ran on more, as to say I can go faster if you like. Flying past the post, Romeo pulled up instantly. Lucy patted him and smiled. Good boy, Romeo. Good boy.
