Fall, or autumn, whichever you preferred, was always brought on by the Autumn Cup. And App was to be competing on the highest turf class the cup offered - Grade One. Something Tobias would have had a hard time imagining he'd be riding in, back in January.
It was time to show the world that Executioner's Apprentice was a real threat on the track, not just in the lower grades but in the highest of them all, with the best jockeys and bloodlines. Tobias had no doubts that the three year old could do it.
"Ten furlongs. Make him go. Not that he doesn't go." Skylark added with a laugh, as he gave Tobias a leg up onto the grey colt. "Do your thing."
"Oh, we will." Tobias assured Skylark, and started off for the gate. The other two horses entered in the race were both Star Thoroughbred owned, and both tough competitors. But That wouldn't stop App, who was never intimidated. The smart colt knew Tobias had a plan, and he obliged that plan. He ran according to a strategy, and a solid one at that.
They went into the gate with little issue, and once in, Tobias pulled down his goggles. He shifted just so in his stirrups and shorted the reins, ready for what would follow. App's ears were pricked forwards, and his eyes bright as he looked over the turf. He knew what the gate meant. It meant run. The gates broke open and App broke with them, shooting out in a position that would put him right up with the leaders, before he'd fall back just about to their shoulders. Ten furlongs was a distance he'd won at before, and a distance App was comfortable with. It was also a good distance to stalk. It was perfect simply because the other jockeys would think he'd run out of steam from pushing, when in fact, App had not. Just when they thought so, he would rush forwards and claim the win for himself.
Horse and rider kept just outside of the inside, allowing enough from for a horse, perhaps two, closer to the rail. The middle was a good place for the precede, who could push without getting boxed in, especially on the turn, and he could in turn leave no option open for the horses on the inside but to follow through with what App wanted. There was a skill to driving the race, and Tobias knew it. They took the corner in the same position they were in, then advanced into the seventh furlongs. Any minute now....
Right as soon as they passed the eighth furlong, Tobias added the stick and gave App his head. The colt urged forwards, trademark bloody shoulder a mere blur as he thundered on past the imaginary pack and to the front as they crossed the finish line.
Once Tobias got App to slow, they looked back around to their trainer. "He did good." Skylark nodded. "We'll see how he does in the cup."-----------------------
