Dark Sunrise
Workout for Winter Cup.
"Mommy!" Eight year old Emma Desorcy strode into the holding stables at Green Horse Fields. "Mom!" She frowned as she saw her mother and aunt standing next to a black mare. She stopped and stared. It was Dark Sunrise. Why was she here? She belonged to Stride of Perfection Stables now. Kirsten turned around and saw her daughter standing there. She motioned for her to join them.
"What's going on?" Emma walked up and looked up at the horse that she had known as a baby. Kirsten smiled. "We got Sunny back and Auntie was just about to ride her again." Melanie grinned and half squealed. She was so excited to get back on the horse she had ridden since Sunny was a yearling. Sunny nosed Melanie's hair and sighed. The mare did not forget her treasured rider. Sunny and Melanie had been a team for three years. It was hard to break a bond like that.
Emma half smiled and turned to her mother. She had something else on her mind. "Where is Cara?" she asked. "I thought we were bringing her out to prep her this week?" The full sister of Blanchette had been one of Emma's favorite horses since Blanchette herself. Melanie and Kirsten exchanged a glance. "Kirsten I'll get Sunny ready and meet you on the track okay?" Kirsten nodded. This was going to be a conversation that Kirsten had been dreading. "Honey, come here." She grabbed Emma's hand and sat her on a bench. "Honey, you aren't going to like what I'm going to say..." Emma jumped up. "You sold her didn't you?" Kirsten bit her lip and nodded. "Sorry dear but we needed..." Emma shook her head violently. "Don't even say it. Just whatever..." Emma burst into tears and ran out of the barn. Kirsten sighed and stood up. Emma was just going to have to get over it. It had never been Kirsten's intention on keeping the white mare. She had warned her daughter not to get too attached. The decision was done.
She walked over to Carmilla's stall and stood there for awhile looking at the dark Night Stalker daughter. There was work to do and she was just going to have to deal with her daughter later. She smiled at the five year old mare. Carmilla had only been lightly raced but it was time to get her name out there. She was sired by Night Stalker and out of Requiem. Her bloodlines were amazing and so was her talent. It was her moods that were a little unpredictable.
She unlatched the stall door and clicked the lead shank on to the mare's halter. It was time to get ready. Today Carmilla would be practicing on the dirt track because Kirsten had decided to start trying Carmilla in the dirt races like all her other half-siblings. The mare runs great on either surface so it should be a good race. She patted the surprisingly quiet mare and led her out to the track.
Aaron was on the track riding Knight Rousseau and mentally preparing himself for the race to come. The Winter Cup was a great chance for the four year old stallion to bring in another win for Akita Rose Stables. Aaron was not quite sure what his competition would be tomorrow because the field was uncertain but he absolutely certain that two year old Instant Success was going to be there. Aaron was kind of nervous because they had lost to the colt before. The two year old colt was just as his name suggests... and instant success.
The dark bay stallion by Night Stalker was quivering with excitement. He was really enjoying his racing season this year. He was on the top of his game and doing amazing. Aaron was a proud rider of the big boy. Next year was going to be even better. Hopefully Rousseau would eventually give him a chance at racing in the Breeder's Cup Classic. Aaron spied young Emma Desorcy bursting out of the holding barns in tears. Uh oh. She must have just found out about Carabella... Aaron felt sorry for the young girl. This was a hard business to be raised around. He shrugged and watched Melanie ride Dark Sunrise on to the track.
Melanie was grinning from ear to ear. She rubbed the mare fondly and just barely resisted from bending over and hugging the mare tight. She was just soooooo excited. Sunny pranced beneath her, also obviously in a great mood. They would be racing tomorrow afternoon and Melanie couldn't wait to feel the wind as they breezed by their competition tomorrow. Oh she couldn't wait!
Kirsten rode Carmilla onto the dirt track lastly. The mare was getting excited. She looked towards the inner turf track but when Kirsten kept her on the dirt and added an extra spring into her step and settled into a smooth canter. Kirsten waved at the other two to go ahead with the workouts planned. Each of them were just going to lightly gallop their mounts to stretch their legs so that they would be loose and ready for the big races tomorrow. It was going to be a good day... if all goes well...
