It was time to get going. Winter was in the air, but fire was still in the body of the colt, who pranced and danced eagerly. Crux was not going to be having any of this waiting about. The colt could most certainly run, and he had ended up in the winner's circle for the vast majority of his races, however, it had been a dry season for wins. Hopefully, with the advent of the Winter Cup, that would change. He was ready and primed and doing well, and Tobias was confident that they could end the winless season and add some red ribbons to the pile of gold and blue. It was just a matter of biding their time with the colt, who had a running style that seemed unremarkable, but that was the cleverness of it.
"Keep him going, keep him thinking and weaving." Skylark instructed Tobias from the ground. "Let him do the blocking, not the others."
"I know, I know, chill." Tobias was hopped up on energy drinks, which were probably going to kill hm, but they kept him sharp. "We'll get'er done."
Devil's Crusade and his jockey made for the gate, and got into it with little trouble. Tobias' mind was racing as the colt danced in the gate. Running as a midrunner was good, especially in big fields. You were never singled out - no horse pressured you, and the closers stayed behind you, the frontrunners and most preceders out of your way. Only other midrunners to contend with, really, which gave plenty of power to box in the other horses, and keep them on their hooves, taking away from their running power. It did have its drawbacks though. Practices were hard to do in an accurate race-replica, as the field dominated what a midrunner did, how they moved - the other horses int he race had a large factor. Where they went, how they moved, and how Tobias could best overthrow them by looking average, then pouncing.
The gates opened and the black colt opened no faster or slower than usual, just average. He just ran typically to start, which contributed to his leg type. He wasn't exceptionally fast or slow to start, and so there was no reason to add the extra pressure of the leg types. Tobias enjoyed the sure footing of Crux as the world around them blurred and he gained speed. The dual-surfaced colt had very strong legs and a solid conformation, moreso than most. It was a mark of the dual-surfacers, Tobias had found; they were much more solid than the others. Perhaps that's what lent to them their versatility, an d as Crux became more of an experienced horse on the track, versatility was quickly becoming his strong suit. He could do bad one race and do amazing the next, rebound and weave on the track...Tobias likes it.
For the sake of getting a "flat time" as Skylark called it, Tobias didn't make Crux weave around the empty turf today. Nope. They'd run the entire ten furlongs like they were in the correct placing. Tobias kept Crux steady for the first five furlongs, letting him ease into the turn as he always did. It worked best for the black colt, who normally ran on the outside anyways.
They covered the distance in good time, and Tobias let Crux really go at about eight furlongs. If he moved well in the middle of the race, the distance he had to cover was not much, nor would anyone be expecting him. They'd be settling in on their final placings, when the highly competitive Crux would take them by storm.
Horse and rider crossed the line, hoping for the best as winter approached, and judging by Skylark's grin, they did, indeed, have hope.------------------------
