By now everyone should be aware of the return of trainer and former owner of Battle Brook Stables Ripley Marsh. Many do not understand why Ripley Marsh left the racing world when she did and when Ripley Marsh was interviewed, she didn't even seem to know herself. For those of you who do not know who Ripley Marsh is, she is the trainer of Hall of Fame El Sol del Mar, winner of the Breeders Cup Classic, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes. She also trained The Devil's Touch of Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies winner fame. Native Flame and DW Flamekissed, who between them have three entrants in the Breeder's Cup this year, were also among her racing string.
Ripley Marsh has returned, albeit with a lot weaker stable than she left with, but under a new name. Witch Creek Stable. We spoke with Ripley Marsh and though we never got any direct quotations, discovered that she has no doubt she will be back at the top of the training and stable ranks. If it takes a year or two to get there, then so be it.
Witch Creek Stable has three race horses on the racing string this year. A two year old grade five colt named Frozen Motion who was purchased in the ARS sale and two yearlings in year 11 who could make some noise in the two year old ranks in year 12. Mastermind is a hall of fame product being out of El Sol del Mar and by Speed Demon. Ripley Marsh seemed most excited about him when we spoke about him. There is also Indian Darling, a daughter of possible Champion sire Native Flame and the broodmare Strike the Win. Ripley liked the filly's chances in the classic races as a three year old more than as a two year old because she did not seem as precocious.
We will definitely have to keep a watch on Ripley Marsh. It is Breeder's Cup time when champions are crowned. However, when a former champion trainer returns, all of the competition better take note. Ripley Marsh could be the dark horse, pun intended, for next years racing.
In other news, Ripley Marsh did state the breeding plans for El Sol del Mar and The Devil's Touch. In Year Twelve, El Sol del Mar will be bred to Native Flame. The Devil's Touch will be bred to DW Flamekissed. Looks like Ripley is keeping her homebreds alive, even if they aren't all under the same ownership.
A filly out of The Devil's Touch was born in Year Eleven. She will be named The Devil's Hourglass. Her sire is Sand Storm. El Sol del Mar was not bred in Year Eleven.
