Aiden turned his head and spotted Sillenia and Krystal coming up on their outside fast. They were very far away from any competition in sight. Now it was just Terror Smile and Sillenia to battle for the win. Aiden asked Smiles for more speed and she gave it but Sill's strides were carrying her far. Aiden gulped and made a quick decision to swing Smiles over face to face with Sillenia. Smiles looked at her and then took off at a full charge forward but as soon as she did, Sillenia was right with her. They were now neck and neck, Smiles with a bit of a lead and then wire was coming up quick. That's when Aiden felt it again. It was the same thing that he had felt in a work over two weeks ago when Iron Man nearly ran Smiles over and it was also the same thing he felt at her last work.
His heart dropped to his stomach and he immedietly pulled on her mouth, leaning back in the saddle, "Stop!" Smiles snorted and rushed forward, taking the bit for the first time in her life. His eyes grew wide with fear. The wire was only a few hundred yards away but he could feel the horse beneath him getting less and less stable by the second. The mare's eyes were wide and searching for revenge on the bay mare. Aiden yanked on her mouth, "Please, stop!" His mare was working so hard and then the wire passed by. They hadn't won but Smiles was only a nose behind Sillenia when they passed it. Then, as if his mare had given up, she tumbled forward. Aiden yelled, as he heard a final crack in her leg and then all he could see was Smile's body rolling over to crush him. Then all went black.
Becky rushed from the stands, tears filling her eyes. Hailey followed her. All Hailey could see was that Smiles was not moving nor was she trying to and Becky saw the same except with Aiden lying on the ground, lifeless. Hailey gripped onto Smile's reins as the vet sped up in a trailer. Becky meanwhile was sitting at Aiden's side. His eyes had opened and his jaw was clenched tight. "Is she okay?" Aiden whispered barely. Becky glanced over at Hailey and Smiles. Becky shook her head, I don't know. Medics were now attempting to get Aiden onto the stretcher and into the ambulance.
Becky stood at the ambulance door, watching Aiden. Hailey was now running over from talking to the vets. "How is she doing?" Aiden spoke with a sigh of relief, desperation in his eyes. Hailey was about to tell him the truth but the look in his eyes made her change her mind. She hesitated and then Aiden spoke, "Just get her home..." he closed his eyes as the pain medicine kicked in. "Miss, we need to leave." The medic spoke. Hailey jumped out of the ambulance and it zoomed away. Tears streamed down her face as she saw screens going up in front of Smiles. She grit her teeth and ran over to the vets.
What am I doing? , she thought to herself.
