Witch Creek Stables is nearly through their first month back in competitive racing. After two and a half years of nonexistence, the horses have come back firing. Enough to suggest, that while El Sol del Mar carried Battle Brook Stables to greatness, a whole group of race horses will carry Witch Creek Stable to greatness.
Mastermind was unfortunately disqualified from his first start of the year due to Ripley Marsh's silly entry into a filly race. Funnily enough Ripley should have known the Dirty Duck Stakes was a filly's race as years ago The Devil's Touch had run in the same race. However, in Mastermind's next start the colt escorted himself under the wire first to break his maiden. The forced week off in January Week One sure did wonders for the spiffy looking chestnut. Boy does it bring back some memories of his mom and pops running on the track years ago. He is currently entered in the Indiana Stakes against older horses at the wire and the end of the month goal is the Juvenile Dirt Sprint back here at Green Horse Fields.
Indian Darling is still getting used to being shipped back and forth for the races. She finished second in her initial start at The Wire. Darla then finished sixth in the January Maiden Dirt. Ripley believes it is too soon to give up on the filly, especially when the races at Green Horse Fields tend to get a little crowded with superstar talent. Given time, Ripley is confident the daughter of Native Flame will rise up and go beyond her sire's talent and success.
One horse to watch is Frozen Motion, a gray turf horse who has been mostly running at The Wire and working privately in the comforts of the home stable. He is just training explosively and has even been toying with DW Flamekissed in a recent workout. The horse's condition could not be any better as of right now. The colt may appear in the entry box in February at Green Horse Fields.
There have been some recent additions to Witch Creek Stables in the form of people and horses.
Construction has been going on at Witch Creek to take down some old barns and put up some modern ones. The head of the construction crew is Clint Westerly. He was a manager for his father's race horse stable. He has taken up co-management with Ripley Marsh at Witch Creek. He is also a stall cleaner, so even if he is at the top, he can't let it go too far to his head. His nephew, Brookson Wells, participated in a jockey school and is now acting as one of the jockeys at Witch Creek Stable. He will be the only one riding the horses in races for Witch Creek while Ripley handles the broodmares at home. When the broodmares have finished foaling, Ripley and Brooks will ride the horses equally in races.
A new filly has come to Witch Creek Stables. Formerly Sweet Melody, a two year old, near white filly has been purchased from Intrepid Racing Inc. She was exchanged for two reserves, one to Mastermind and one to Frozen Motion when they have retired from racing. The filly, now named Bella Luna, has beautiful MHS lines and two starts to her name so far. Ripley is reminded by her former turf champ Little Love Bug and hopes the same success comes to Bella Luna.
El Sol del Mar and Ashanti have given birth so far producing a big chestnut colt with a bomb cloud blaze and an athletic looking filly, respectively. El Sol del Mar was bred to Native Flame and Ashanti was bred to DW Flamekissed. The foals will be named Sun King and Summer Romance.
The Devil's Touch and Finale Slew have yet to foal.
