Considering the Axis Mundae twin was up against older and more experienced sprinters the previous year, she did exceedingly well – winning three times, placing in six, showing in three and getting to the Grade Three status, which all in all as a sprinter against Here’s The King and Pegasus Wings, was pretty hard to get to. Tanya had been happy with the fillies performance this year, and now that both Pegasus Wings and Here’s The King were retiring, Bella was going to show the sprinters on the track who was boss. The filly had beaten Pegasus Wings, White Chocolate, and even Here’s The King. It was thought that the one to watch out for this year would be White Chocolate. The filly was one win away from achieving the Grade One status, and for Dreamvalley Stables it would be a huge achievement, but Bella wasn’t going down without a fight this year.
The filly was entered in the Unicorn Horn Sprint, over five furlongs on the turf. The field was pretty easy in all honesty, and if there was a horse that was going to be a major threat to the field, it would be Seraphim. The Star Thoroughbreds filly had been a last minute entrant to the race a day before it was due to run. Other entrants included Chicago Blues, a Close Racing entrant who had started twice this year, placing second and fourth. The colt was a five year old, and bound to be in atleast his last racing season by now. He’d proved himself to be a good runner in his two-year-old season but had slowly moved downhill since then.
Iron Man was an entry from Triple Krown Racing. Quite shocking to be honest as the five year old had only come back into work last December as a four year old. He wasn’t raced as a two-year-old. The colt was a front runner and he would be right up there with us at the front of the field. Sugar Jayde was also entered. The Grade Four three year old was one win away from achieving grade three – she was also a major threat to us. She had a great start to the season with a place in the Out Of The Gate Stakes. Popcorn Blitz was entered, but we didn’t think much of him as he only broke his maiden back in December. Ford Model T had a great start to the season, winning the Aquamarine Stakes in style, making it three wins in a row for the colt, and finally breaking into Grade Four.
Bella had spent the previous day relaxing in the spring sunshine in the paddock alongside the other fillies. She had been brought in that afternoon by Matthias and had a feed, full of oats and other nutrients that would be essential for the filly. The next morning, Tanya had been down to the barn to find the filly perked up and ready for this, before wandering off to the changing room to change. Bella was one of them unpredictable fillies. She can appear calm and relaxed to us, but she does inherit some of her parents side with her aggressiveness. She also dislikes people who try to boss her around, which isn’t too good either. If you were in the paddock before the race, you’d see the things that this filly does. She is an absolute nightmare. The only time she calms down and focuses is when she is in the gate. That’s when she turns from this nightmare to a focused and more determined filly.
Tanya finished securing her body protector in the changing room and collected her hat and crop. Matthias had tacked up the filly and walked her out of the barn into near the entry to the turf track. He offered Tanya a leg up and she accepted. She bounced up onto the well conformed filly. Her muscles rippled effortlessly under her shiny black coat. Over the winter she had matured physically and it was really easy to tell in all circumstances. The filly walked forward assuringly, every step she made was like being in heaven. She stood taller than last year, and stronger too. Tanya smiled as the filly’s smooth transition to trot took her by surprise. Standing up in the stirrups, Tanya let her canter a bit, letting the reins slip through her hands. She pulled the goggles down from her hat over her eyes, and began to focus. They approached the starting gate at the five furlong pole and Tanya slowed the filly. Bella tossed her mane and snorted.
Gating the filly was no problem when no other horse was about. She would walk in easily, and become focused and determined on winning. The gates closed and the centre of attention for both horse and rider was bouncing out onto the turf and winning the race. The bell rang and both horse and rider sprung effortlessly out on to the track. The filly pricked her ears, her long stride was effortless. Rounding the turn quickly and furiously, Tanya felt her arms ache. The filly pulled and at the top of the stretch, she let her run. The crop rose and fell onto the filly’s rump and Tanya stretched out as much as she could. Under the wire, she relaxed and patted the filly. They were ready to take on the Unicorn Horn.
